Phantasy Star Gen2 .DAT files
#1
Hello all, long time no see.

I stumbled over my favorite game of all time again when a complete translation was finally made public, and this version of the game is just so pretty, so I'm totally going to rip it.

I'm already hitting a stumbling block, though.  The .DAT files can't be decompressed the same way I usually do, and looking at it, there doesn't seem to be a header on any of them.  If someone can give me a clue as to where to start with this, I'd be grateful.

Here's the .DAT for the battle files.  Any help would be appreciated.

:o

How'd you get it to decompress?

It's basically a type of LZ but has the bit-flags in a separate part of the file for some reason.
I could write a decompressor/extractor for you in a bit.

If I could figure out the palette I would have it go ahead and convert the images too

Weird; I'm surprised they put that kind of effort into something that's essentially a budget title.

Would the bit flags for the pallet be around the same place as the image itself? These have been ripped before, but idk how to contact the ripper, as they seem to only know Spanish.

The Cutting Room Floor has the unused stuff, and this is where the already ripped graphics are. I dunno if this will help at all, but I'd still like to provide my own rip.

I enabled transparency but I don't think the images in this game uses it. In particular the effects appear to use some kind of blending.

That's weird, the transparency worked for me.

But yeah, this game uses some weird ass blending. When I tried playing it on emulator, there were some weird as hell graphical glitches because of it.

But thank you so much. This is going to lead to some awesome things.

Ah, I spoke too soon as usual. Some of the images end up looking weird; I think they're stuck in certain constraints?

Here's one that has a few of them. Maybe being able to manually adjust the size of the image like you can do in Tinke for DS games can help with that?

Hm, another problem. This one isn't showing any image data when I know there is something there. Maybe different compression/bit placement? This seems to be a problem with the MONDAT too; the key bosses aren't showing up.

Actually, missing images seems to be a case with all of them. Shoot.

So I did some digging around, and I was able to find this toolkit, but I can't seem to get it to work. This might be able to get all the images to show up, if someone could help me with it.
