New to Spriting...need tips and feedback.

Hello, I am just starting out as a pixel artist and am really enjoying myself. I have just recently started messing around with sprite sheets and am looking for suggestions.

This is part of a sprite sheet I made. The original is a 4-directional sprite, like old-school Zelda or Pokemon games, but I cropped it down to this strictly to keep it small for the sake of the forums.

(Columns A-F, Rows 1 and 2.)

I was curious about the best way to order my sprites when placing them onto a sprite sheet.

D1 and D2 are the wolf standing stationary. The walking pattern, in my mind, would be D to C to D to B.
A and B are a simplistic tail wagging animation.
A running jump animation is also shown from D to E to D to F or, for more simplicity, D to E to F.

So, back to my question: Is the current set-up fine OR would it be better to make an individual row for each movement cycle...even if it means copying frames used in other cycles? Would it better to have my idle animation first or does it really not matter? I am somewhat ignorant about how games read these sheets, for the most part.

Any other suggestions on properly doing sprite sheets?

I usually separate the animations so I don't get confused later on. For systems where there are sprite limitations, with lots of sprite reuse and "mix and match" animation, having this setup would be ok, though.

OK, thanks, because I have seen people do what you have said and wasn't sure if my current setup could work...so it has to do with the limitations of whatever is reading the sprite sheet? Appreciate it!
