Some spritesheets

Smile
Uh, hey there, name's Eric.

So, a while ago, I made these Sonic sprites to fill in a bunch of my time.

I have one of Knuckles in the works, as well as some other sheets of mine you can check out with the keyword "spritesheet" in the gallery directory of my profile.

Other sheets I plan to make/are in the works:
Amy
Metal Sonic
Bubsy (I know there's a lot of people out there who hate this bobcat, but at the same time, there's a bunch of peeps who adore this bobcat, myself included.)
Lilac

Hope to do some stuff around here, I don't really know exactly. .3.  Blank

Hey Eric, first off, welcome to the forums, nice to have new blood, so to speak Tongue

So, i took a look through your DA gallery, and i have a few bits of general advice and comments i can give you, then i'll get a little more specific with the sprite sheets you've shown Smile

So first off, i wanna say you seem to have a solid base to work with, your animations seem fluid and nice, although they also seem heavily based on sonic animations, not a bad thing but i'll touch on this in a minute. Overall your colour choice isn't terrible too, i would recommend at this point looking into hue shifting and saturation/desaturation to give your colours more "oomph".

You definitely have a set style, which is fine, but don't be afraid to push out of that. Its great to establish your own style but dont get too locked into it, and i've noticed with some characters you draw you tend to go more in the direction of your own style as opposed to their personal qualities, for example, your Mario drawing has him very slim and tall, which makes him more of a red luigi. This is something i struggled with at first myself, but you'll find branching out will definitely improve your own style too and give it more variance Smile

Also, don't be afraid to dive into adding more detail, and breaking your initial outlines. I would absolutely look into observational drawing and learn how to work from building blocks, tacking our pictures in 3d space and as parts as opposed to a whole, this should be your next main step imo.

As i say though, you have a good base and a fantastic drive to create, so you're moving in the right direction, this is just the part where you should push yourself and challenge yourself to start seeing some major improvements.

When it comes to these sheets, they're pretty basic so not much can be said, but i'll go with anything major i've noticed:

Sonic: Looks mostly good, the only major issue would be the tilted head in the flume, waiting, cling etc. frames, it looks like you may have used a rotate tool instead of built them yourself? The outlines are messy and it's very noticeable in this smooth, simplistic style. I would also recommend changing the background colours for readability, blue on purple isn't the best look.

Tails: These are pretty bang on, the eyes seem off to me though, they seem slightly small, but only after looking at sonic and seeing how big his eyes are, it may just be a sake of when they're next to eachother, without seeing the eyes larger i couldnt tell. Then going onto Fang, he is back to the large eyes, makes tails' eyes seem a bit off...

Fang: Fangs eyes seem to be looking to far forward, as in, out at me, they could benefit from looking more to the right(our right). They also seem possibly pillow shaded? I cant quite tell without zooming in. Otherwise i think my only other comment is, i think this is the first time i've seen Fang without a hat, feels weird... Not bad though ;P

Overall the sheets look pretty nice, i think the colour choices could stand to be improved a little but i think once you look into hue shifting you might see what i mean.

Its a good overall start though and i look forward to seeing something more detailed from you in the future and seeing how your skills come along Smile

EDIT: Ah, one thing i forgot to bring up was the ball jump sprites, i'm not sure how well they will look animated but they look a little... off, not sure what it is about them but something i cant quite put my finger on...

"looking into hue shifting and saturation/desaturation"
As in making the colors look more vibrant? I can do that.

"the tilted head"
Yeah, I used paint.net alongside Piskel for that. (Piskel's my main software for spriting. I have looked into Aesperite, but I'm trying to save some bucks. .3.)

"blue on purple isn't the best look."
As in Sonic's blue doesn't fit? Or does it have to do with the sheet background and character?

"to far forward"
Well, not exactly facing forward. If it was to be looked at on a 3D plane, his eyes would be looking a little bit to the right instead of just forward.

"possibly pillow shaded?"
had to do a quick google search for that :U
I guess...? I don't really know. I just sprite things the way i see it. .3. (I had to use a red skull for comparison)

"this is the first time i've seen Fang without a hat, feels weird... Not bad though ;P"
Yeah, it was my decision. I may add it as an accessory in a future sheet update. When I linked the sheet to the SRB2 Discord, reception wasn't pretty... (I'm no longer in that server due to how people perceive sprites differently.)

Overall, I can agree that some parts could be touched on.
Speaking of that actually, I've been doing a quick edit/comparison to one of my Sonic sprites. And as I'm doing them, yeah it does look like there's an indirect light source. I try my best. *shrugs* .3.

I would recommend, if doing this, to then go back over the sprite in order to smooth lines, as rotation can be heavily unrealiable.

The background of the spritesheet itself, when you look at the emotes at the bottom, the blue tends to blend and, whilst it is a different colour, it can still be hard to tell at first glance. The key thing in spriting is readability! Smile

"to far forward"
Well, not exactly facing forward. If it was to be looked at on a 3D plane, his eyes would be looking a little bit to the right instead of just forward.

That is the issue, the characters are in a 3D plane, but if you look at his eyes, they are directly in the middle with no leaning to either side, this makes him look directly out of the screen. This is handled better in your sonic sprite where, the right(ours) eye is one pixel thinner, making the eyes feel slightly more aligned with sonics view while keeping the classic "vaguely looking at the player look". Fang's eyes unfortunately are symmetrical which looks very strange. This can be fixed easily by moving the center one pixel over to the right Smile

Dont worry, we all pillow shade at some point, having zoomed in i can see its jsut the white areas on fang effected, just, dont worry about outlining the eyes, they are white so they will stick out as seperate no matter what, use your darker shade for the darker areas of the furs and eyes instead :

The new sonic looks good, i would say bring his new, away facing ear over to our left slightly, as it is behind the head so it would be connected at a slightly different angle.

Trying your best is literally all anyone can ever ask. And its the best way to improve Smile

Alright so I applied some more details to the new sprite + Fang, how's it looking?

while i'm at it i might as well start to classify the others as the beta stage

also i will fix fang as well to match the new style, this is just here for me to understand

Sonic is looking good now, i think the only issues i can pick up on at the moment is the light source on the mouth area, the shoes and the back two spines is looking a little off, but otherwise its definitely going in the right direction. As for Fang, yep, thats what i was talking about, it gives him a bit more 3D existence(i cant think of the term i want i just woke up, apologies!) now, he isn't looking as flat Smile
