Best DS Emulator for ripping 2D games
#1
I was wanting to rip some sprites from Super Princess Peach (and potentially Yoshi's Island DS), and I was wondering what the best emulator for ripping such games is. Any suggestions?

I would suggest desmume:

You might also need some tools, the link above has a lot of pointers for that too.

Seems to work fine, but is there any way to change the background color on the layer viewer? Pure black tends to often cause problems with sprites that have pure black in them.

Have you encountered pure black for these games? Are you ripping per OAM viewer or do you deactivate layers?

If the emulators fail you, I would try the tools.

Trying for the OAM layers. Also I would prefer not having to use external tools.

A few thoughts:
- Just realized that deactivating layers is the same as using the OAM viewer. Apparently you can't use keys to deactivate the layers.
- Btw, No$GBA is another emulator that comes to mind, never used it though so I can't say if it's better for ripping.
- Also I'm not sure if desmume can deactivate or separate sprites on other sprites.
- I also tried changing the palette colours like I can do in vSNES (black to pink), but as far as I can see, that's not possible with desmume.

I also took a look inside the sections and saw that a lot sheets have been done by Ragey.
He probably used GGD for his YI / SPP tile rips, since he states the colours inside desmume tile viewer are slightly off (not sure if this is an issue anymore after all these years and updates, I haven't checked it):

Anyway, my knowledge about DS ripping is too limited to really help out, all I can do is pointing out methods, links, emulators and tools. If I would decide to try ripping DS games, I would probably download everything related to this topic and try around like a little child with a box full of toys (does tool/method/emulator x works well with game y?).

In the end, all you can do is trying around with the stuff you can get your hands on.

From what I heard, No$GBA is one of the less accurate DS emulators compared to desmume and MelonDS, so not sure about that.

Update: Tried No$GBA, it's viewers is better but I am unsure if it's able to be resized to 1x. It's default size is practically unusable, plus it's tile viewer has a grid that I don't know how to turn off. Any help with this would be appreciated. Edit: I also couldn't find a pause and frame advance button, which desmume has.

Also MelonDS is probably better for general gameplay use, but is lacking in debugging tools, so that's no good in terms of sprite ripping.
