Beat the Spade one, then it will turn into Heart, Club, and Diamond, in turn.

Also, the higher-def Mario, Luigi, and Toad sprites are leftovers from SMAS, for those who are wondering. There's actually a complete set of battle sprites for SMAS in the ROM data as well.
