But more seriously, a stage based off one of the areas in Balloon Fight would be cool. Floating platforms, man-eating flish, and pink flipper things galore! Plus lightning balls from the clouds.
Isn't the fish already in the Ice Climbers stage?
Wario's Woods could be interesting if done correctly.

If you made a isle delfino one I would flip out. Just don't make it float around the plaza put it in one place. Oh and you should make boss levels (like the place its fought in) should be able to be unlocked if the player beats the boss a certain way. (just a suggestion it sounds kinda dumb)

Hey, what resolution should the minimum be for a stage? Might be a good thing to figure out before we start getting too far with them.

Actually it shouldn't really make a difference. Just base it off the sprites and try to keep the size ratio between characters and levels similar to what it was in official Smash Bros. games.

Small sample for the Ballon Fight stage I mentioned earlier. I actually have more done, but this is all I want to show right now. It's what the floating platforms will look like.
The colors you see there are borrowed from the Luigi and Pit used in the size chart >.>; I'll change it if I have to, but I'd rather not >.>;

I think we need an actual OoT stage in this. Perhaps the Desert Collosus, or Ganon's Castle?

Would you mind posting the layout in mind? I'd like to see the idea before you start on it.

I'd like to feature underused games in stages, but I'd also like a more popular game stage as well. For example, a TP stage would be ideal, but there's definitely room for a level based on LttP or OOA/OOS too. Ocarina could be a good third option, since Nintendo seems to have dropped it in favor of the newer series.

Too late, I was totally planning on making it regardless of acceptance. I figured I'd just make the tiles and leave the layout to the programmer, but if you wanna see the lame excuse for a layout I was thinking of...
The uh... the birdy dude is for the background... I thought it was cool...
And up in the top center I was gonna put the thunder cloud, but I haven't made that yet. But that might look weird, so i was thinking about maybe putting a giant thunder cloud across the entire top of the screen.

Here's a basic glimpse of what the layout would look like.

There are tall walls on either side of the stage, making it hard to kill off the sides of the stage, but there's still straight up and the two pits on either side of the stage. Stage hazards would include Radan (no, not the Godzilla monster, Rodan) popping up int the background and firing a laser across the stage, or Kachua appearing and tossing ruffians or scrap metal at you.
You can see the location itself near the end of this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LbAGE56_HGc
Any thoughts on this one?

It looks good. Just a few things.
First, the shading on the dirt could be improved a bit unless you purposely made it like that.
Second, the "birdy dude" would look much better if you darkened it and made it smaller to put in the background. It would also be nice if you made him just move around in the background. Heck make one, two or three of them do it at once.
Third, the cloud should be in the foreground, but it should also be an object. I can't remember if it moves or not, but if it doesn't it could just fade in and out and launch electricity balls occasionally when it appeared.
Edit: The flippers should act like in SSBM and just stay in place in the air.

You know I always considered this:
When a franchise does not have a great character but has an interesting environment, make it a stage. (ex Balloon Fight)
When a franchise has an interesting character that can't be a fighter make in an AT.
So you see Sky Blue Wiggler, Doshin's franchise would make a better AT then a stage, because the character himself is more interesting than the environment he comes from.
