Star's M&L3 sprite thread: because everyone else is doing it
#16
Culex is a little too big. His head is about the same size as Mario's head. Remember about half of his body is electric squiggles. The rest of his body is two and a half Marios.

Also I think that Shy Guy Grey has a better color... Actually find something of a dark purple.

Anyway, I never thought there was anything wrong with Smithy, but fix what you want to. For Yoshi, his cheeks seem a little jagged. As for Culex, he looks amazing so far.
Thank you for welcoming me back, I really appreciate it. Well, to other people's eye, it may look fine..but to me, there's some problems that are bugging me. I want it to look good in my eyes. Yoshi's cheeks were the biggest problems I had when making him. I'll need to find a way to fix them.

Tank Smithy has a wierd cannon barrel. Now that I look at it, it might be just because of how the SMRPG sprite was. Ya know, kind of a more bird's eye view thing so it's off a bit. I'm going to make it more smoother.

Thanks. Culex is gonna be a pain animating due to muscles and what not. And yeah, I did...kinda. I blended mine with Ridge's and we were gonna make more sprites off of that. A team project sort of thing.

(09-27-2009, 09:42 PM)mutantyoshi Wrote: your Yoshi is better than mine. How about you do the Yoshi for the Custom BIS Project, since yours is better, and I have to do the babies, so one less character for me to do...

As for the cheek, I think you should get rid of the outer grey-ish pixel on top of the cheeks and the lines that are right after the bottom part of the cheeks (where his nose begins at the bottom) get rid of that grey pixel, I did that to yours to see, and I think it makes his nose look less blocky.
I just saw your Yoshi a while ago. I haven't seen your topic in a while and so I had to go take a peek. You got good stuff man, just a few things you need to work on. And I'll work on Yoshi for the project. I don't mind. Yoshi is one of my fav Mario characters.

Yoshi looks pretty good, though I have to say that the head and arms look off. The cheeks are blocky, as said before, and the arms need a little less of an upward curve. You also need a better pallet, because neither of those look Yoshi enough imo.
And about the Sea Pipe Statue, there's an easy explanation for that. The only reason for the use of 568967489 shades is the fact that it starts out as a background object and changes colors. Background objects = tons of shades.

Culex is awesome. Keep going.

And ye olde tank head, again I see. It's definitely better now, although it's still not perfectly in-style and could use some (more) reshaping/reshading. The shape you have in general is too... Organic. Try to make it more geometric and mechanical. shading, uhh... Shiny things in M&L3 have rather smooth shading, as opposed to your jagged style there. The dithering on the back of the turret (head) part is out of style, so fix that by just using a line of lighter shade to replace it.

Does this mean.... Could it BE...?
Are we reopening the duel topic ALREADY?
Thanks buddy. I'm glad to be back as well and to be back into this. For Yoshi, I didn't really care much about the green pallete. I just wanted to see how I would do the shading when I found the right pallete. Okay, the 294295259 shading thing makes sense now. Thank you so much for your critique. It's very helpful. Smithy should look better now after i fix all of those problems.

It just could be Wink You never knooooooooow...

the fist one is from my Yoshi palate, the second one is a new one, I figured that mine was an accurate palate, since no-one commented on it...so here

Well, it's a bit of an improvement, but still isn't perfect. Crits I had before still stand.
Anyhow, that first pallet is slightly better but not greenish-blue enough.

I would have to assume, knowing Star, that he's not planning on sheeting Yoshi. Don't hold me to it; only a guess.
I MIGHT sheet Yoshi. I won't say yes or no on that. And Yoshi's pallete does look alot better on the latest one you posted. I appreciate all of yall's support! It helps.

Koopaul: Hmm...I'm not sure about Shy Guy Grey's pallete...his was more of a pink. I didn't like it.

Better?

I'm not worried about Yoshi's arms(they look fine to me) and I'm gonna choose the latest green pallete by MutantYoshi. If everything's alright with Tank Smithy, I'm gonna continue on.

Shading is much better now. Though the dithering-type shading on the back needs to go bye-bye completely. What I meant by a single line of highlight was something to this effect:

And here: http://www.spriters-resource.com/ds/mari...heet/21489 (Feet of the connected ones)

Unfortunately I have to restate the shape crit again. It doesn't seem that you've changed its shape at all. Maybe I can put it in better perspective if I word it differently:
Currently it looks like someone sculpted it out of clay, rather than how it should look: perfect machine-made angles and precise shapes.

Oh, by the way, I just noticed that the top of the turret has an odd angle to it. I would highly recommend rendering the majority of the top face unseen, as the slanted angle you have there looks quite awkward.

Nice to see you haven't lost your touch, and are still out and spriting Star. 8D
