He looks incredibly sad in your sprite; get rid of the "eyebrow" bits and raise the eyes slightly. Also, I don't know if it's just me, but his arms/legs look too thick. In the games, he is quite skinny and the chubbier limbs make his head look smaller (which is quite big in the games).

Sheesh Mumbo is hard. I tried a few thing but I don't think I'm helping.

I played around with the palette and the shading, don't know if it's good but hey, I gave it a try!

Merged a few ideas and edited
Any better?
I've edited a few small things on all of them that were bugging me like the shape of Mumbo's skull and increased the contrast on Banjo's darker brown shade because you could barely see the shading, and changed the background because that white was really bright and distracting.
Mumbo's eyes are freaking me out and djfnsnd;
I'll give ol Mumbo a shot~

I'll give ol Mumbo a shot~ Yeah I know what you mean, I spent so much time on them and I'm still displeased
Hey, at least you gave it a shot!
These kind of things are complicated. The problem (and it's consistent with everybody) is that you're trying to add too much detail into such a tiny space. For a style like this, you need to simplify things. Like for example, his nostrils. You really shouldn't even be able to fit both of them there. You need to try to create an illusion effect for that.
Also, since the style is relying on "big heads", Mumbo's head could even be a lil tad bigger.(since in game, his head is bigger than Banjo's)
Also..SPEAKING OF DETAILS... I'M A HYPOCRITE.

I don't know how you do it Star, but you do it well every time

It's perfect other than the fact that I have an incredibly-OCD pet peeve about blocky/flat edges (TSR has refined my artistic vision a little too much I think lol) that makes them always bother me wherever they are, which is mostly the reason I did my edit up there. I can look past them if done right/AA'd properly, and I know it's something I have to get over but I just can't help but notice them.
lol well that's honestly a good thing to have! It'll help you with making smooth pieces.
I combined both the old Mumbo and new Mumbo's design. That's the only reason why I made it blocky like that.
Also Gruntilda's face revamp :B

Your sprites are great Star! Don't know if it's just me, but Grunty's mouth seems to cover too much of her face, reducing by two pixels or so should do it. I really need to get back to Topper, I'll try and post an update tomorrow.

Doesn't Grunty almost constantly grin the whole first game? Seems a bit odd to have her scowl
Otherwise, It looks much much better shading wise
