I was thinking that the evolution to the marine iguana should stay an iguana, since most water starters stay the same species excluding the oshawatt line.

Going off of a theme doesn't have to change it's species. It could still look like an iguana while having various details that link it to an overall theme. Either way, I'm not saying this like it's something we should do, just that, if anyone can make a design that works with it well, then we should go with it.

Personally, the common theme I had in mind was that each starter would resemble an extint animal in the end.
Something like:
Kiwi - Elephant Bird
Tiger - Sabretooth
Iguana - Ouranosaurus?

That would be interesting, but it also seems a bit basic. Gen 6 had an interesting theme what with it being RPG classes and what not. Then again, as long as the designs are good it won't really matter.

We could also go with the power of the Triforce:
The grass type could represent courage.
The fire type could represent power.
And the water type could represent wisdom.
Or something along those lines.
(I'd say wisdom for grass and courage for water, since Ganon captures Zelda and is defeated by Link.)

It seems like grass designs are leaning more to grass/flying, which would be more unique because there already IS a grass/ground starter.
Any way to work in a flying/fighting/rock trio?

But still, I think there could be better, more convenient types (as Grass/Flying has a plethora of weaknesses)

How about instead of flying/rock/fighting subtypes we do flying/ground/electric
they arent as perfect but they allow us to avoid another fire/fighting
and I can see the iguana following in Swampert's footsteps and being a water-ground, and an electric-fire tiger would be pretty dang awesome.
