Like the NES was THE console, then Sega took a bite and now Sony and Microsoft are your big 2 and you 'also' have a Nintendo. As you might've known, the game industry has changed, too. Back then, videogames were measured by their raw power. They didn't stamp a huge "16-bit" on the cartridge socket of every Genesis for nothing. the NES was THE console because it was strong at the time, it had a big userbase. The games up until the Gamecube/PS2 era followed suit by making the consoles compete in raw power. They also thought like everyone else and the result wasn't great. It's not a surprise that current Nintendo consoles are numerically weaker than the concorrents. However they're the only one with balls enough to do something different. They don't want to compete in power, because the result is always a dumbed down PC. Not surprisingly, most of the PS4/XBone games are found on PC bar a few exclusives and the overall experience is basically the same. So personally I think that as a whole, Nintendo's strategy is alright. I wish I was as comfortable as them, doing wildly different hardware every iteration instead of being extremely creative like the rest and aiming for 4k resolution, which is what gaming really needs. RE: Nintendo Switch Topic; #byebyenx - Jermungandr - 03-02-2017 Not to mention that every time Nintendo does do something different, the other companies are always quick to try to copy them (and try to outdo them, sometimes with success and sometimes not). The Wii seemed silly at first but then everyone else tried motion controls too. After the Wii U came out, Sony was quick to add a touch pad to the controller of their upcoming console (early concepts even show the touchpad as a game screen). Even now before the console has even been released, there has already been a patent spotted for a Sony product that looks suspiciously like the Switch. Maybe it's a matter of opinion, but I feel like it says something when Nintendo is the one being followed by the copycats rather than the other way around. RE: Nintendo Switch Topic; #byebyenx - Goemar - 03-02-2017 Sony was quick to add a pretty much useless Touch Pad which has very little support in most titles... yeah I don't really see that as a nod to the Wii U, if anything the DS probably had more to do with influencing that, even then - I think that claim is reaching a bit. I don't mind Nintendo doing new stuff, it's cool. My problem is the 'disconnect' between them and their very own customers. Like Star Fox was just weird for the sake of being weird. NSMB played it so safe every title was stupidly close to the one before it. Metroid became, well the less said the better. Nintendo could easily keep doing the wonderful magic stuff they do, and like be aware of their audience better. I don't think anyone wanted Metroid Federation Force and I believe Star Fox would have been a lot better if it was more traditional. People wanted a bigger deeper Zelda game, and they got it - and people love it. That's how it should be done. RE: Nintendo Switch Topic; #byebyenx - Jermungandr - 03-02-2017 Of course it's not a "nod". That'd be ridiculous. But anyways, the influence was more obvious when it was still in conceptual stages and showing a literal game screen on the controller to touch. And I'm not defending all the dumb mistakes Nintendo has made lately. They've been disappointing me as well as of late. Though now that I'm thinking about it ... most of their mistakes have been more on the software side than the hardware. The Wii U honestly was and is not a bad system. It's main issue lies more in its overall lack of games, as well as bad and forced game design decisions like we see with Starfox U. Then there was the poor quality virtual console and lackluster online support. Those were the things that really killed the console. But the hardware itself is perfectly fine. RE: Nintendo Switch Topic; #byebyenx - Goemar - 03-02-2017 The Wii U was flawed. The Switch is pretty much what the Wii U should have been, as it looked like the Game Pad could be played anywhere. Though I think most of the Wii U's problems happened before anyone even got there hands on it. I know so many people who didn't realise it was a new console, instead thinking it was something for the Wii. Wii U just wasn't a good name choice, it sounded like a simple upgrade or addition to the Wii. Not to mention when it was revealed the console wasn't even really shown (if at all) and we just got the controller. As the Wii was so family focused the sudden change to 'only one player can use the fancy new controller' was a dumb move. Hell even in Mario Kart the Wii U controller person got a better experience showing what items people had, a map etc etc. The Wii U was just... I don't know, just not thought out well. You either got it because you loved Nintendo or it was just this weird alienating thing. RE: Nintendo Switch Topic; #byebyenx - miyabi95_ - 03-02-2017 well i'm buying a wii-u as soon as i can now that all eyes are on the switch now. while it's not something as revolutionary as the gamecube and whatnot...well, let me be honest and say to me it's well worth being able to play pokken tournament. lol RE: Nintendo Switch Topic; #byebyenx - Dolphman - 03-02-2017 Picked up mine this morning. Linking to my Nintendo account required a verification key sent to you via email, and make a new password. Overall, not bad. Played a bit of Breath of the Wild, and really enjoying it a lot. Taking a break for now. Sadly, our EB Games was sold out of Super Bomberman R, and the next shipment will come out in April. RE: Nintendo Switch Topic; #byebyenx - Kriven - 03-03-2017 Just finished linking my Nintendo Account to the Switch when the left Joycon died. I wasn't even using it remotely, I was holding the thing like the Wii U gamepad with the Joycons plugged into it. Nothing I'm doing is making it respond. Edit: It finally came back on after an hour of googling and trying different things. I had to smack it on the bottom. RE: Nintendo Switch Topic; #byebyenx - eureka - 03-03-2017 Warning: Very annoying high pitched sound, headphones users RE: Nintendo Switch Topic; #byebyenx - Jermungandr - 03-04-2017 So my store sold out of Nintendo Switches (is that the official plural for the system? Switches?) pretty much immediately, as expected. The weird thing is, we still have TONS of copies of Breath of the Wild left for the Switch, despite not receiving more copies than we did systems. And nobody bought any of the other Switch games either … Sooooo … what I’m wondering is, do people even know that the Switch doesn’t come with any games? Because I’m pretty sure a bunch of people are about to be disappointed. RE: Nintendo Switch Topic; #byebyenx - Goemar - 03-04-2017 I think you're probably looking at scalpers... I'm just wondering if any of them validate their current price. For example, I would have been down for Bomberman, but at 50 dollars I'm not as inclined. RE: Nintendo Switch Topic; #byebyenx - Kriven - 03-04-2017 I've got Bomberman and 1-2-Switch here, but I haven't tried them out yet. Do you guys want me to do a first impressions write up tomorrow? (Also, if you're in the United States, join Best Buy's gamer's club. Pretty big savings. I think I only paid 47.99 for Breath of the Wild, and 39.99 for the other two.)
