RE: New Console: The Nintendo Feel - PatientZero - 05-03-2011 Haptic feedback? Really? That's their big plan? That's not a technology that can really be applied to games generally, what extra depth or extra functionality are they expecting that to bring? The main application for having a tactile touchscreen would be for interfaces or controls as far as I can tell, say with the iPhone or iPad, being able to feel where the onscreen keyboard is and such, which becomes totally redundant once you realise you're holding a controller, with actual physical buttons right there. The only way I can see this being any use at all is if games use the touchscreen on the controller for game specific or situational controls, so they could move away from the pure analogue controls and do things like digital sliders and pots, but even with that I can't imagine you'd exactly lose much by not having haptic feedback. RE: New Console: The Nintendo Feel - Vipershark - 05-03-2011 I, for one, dislike touchscreens as an input method for games. I'll take physical buttons and tactile feedback over a screen any day. You might be able to do more things with a touchscreen (as in, infinite button configurations), but a physical controller is infinitely more practical. edit- this excludes the DS since it has a stylus. I'm referring to capacitive touchscreens such as the ones on iphones where you have to use your fingers. ...though while I'm not including stylus touchscreens in this, I still prefer buttons to tapping with a pen. RE: New Console: The Nintendo Feel - GaryCXJk - 05-03-2011 I think it has lots of potential. Imagine a customized layout, whatever the game suits. Does the game require more buttons? No problem, let's generate more buttons! This way you can actually "feel" the individual buttons. Of course you don't actually feel the buttons, but you at least can distinguish the different buttons. RE: New Console: The Nintendo Feel - GrooveMan.exe - 05-03-2011 I dislike capacitive touch screens for the same reason as Viper, actually! But that patent schematic had a touch screen in junction with regular buttons. The DS has shown how the touch screen can function as a very effective interractive HUD, so that's just dandy. Though this feedback gimmick doesn't really bother me - mostly because it doesn't 'do' anything. Similar to how the 3DS' 3D doesn't do anything; it survives off the strength of its more practical applications, the acelerometer, the increased internet/wireless functionality, etc. etc. So yeah. Until they mention gameplay-affecting hardware features, I see no real cause for concern. RE: New Console: The Nintendo Feel - Woppet* - 05-03-2011 Y'know, i never though. If these controllers will have touch screens. Maybe they'll be in 3D too. RE: New Console: The Nintendo Feel - GrooveMan.exe - 05-03-2011 N-no. They made a point of the 3DS having the top screen as 3D because fingerprints and smudges will cause your eye to defocus. It can't/won't be both at the same time. RE: New Console: The Nintendo Feel - Dazz - 05-03-2011 Am I the only one that's thinking about how Nintendo are having touch screens on controllers, and how often touchscreens get scratched the shit out of? I fucking hate touchscreens. That's all I'm going to say. Elite Beat Agents, Ouendan. RE: New Console: The Nintendo Feel - StarSock64 - 05-03-2011 I don't want to look at my controller, or feel bumpies on my controller, I want to look at my big tv. I'm starting to run out of space for consoles and I'm not sure how I feel about shoving them in a closet or getting rid of them... When I get my own place I'm going to have a room dedicated to my videogame (and i guess anime) stuff depending on whether you come live with me or not we could share it if you want RE: New Console: The Nintendo Feel - tsr moderation staff - 05-04-2011 vuper's makin' da moves B] but yeah, how is this "textured" screen supposed to work anyway? liquid metal?? Are they honestly going to make Zelda dungeons with hidden buttons against the wall? Mario levels where i drag my finger over a drawn path for Mario to explore? Pikmin where i pick them out of the ground by jabbing monsters with my fingers? okay that last one sounds awesome but where the hell is pikmin 3 Futhermore, how in the hell is this more immersive than pulling my arm back and firing arrows by releasing buttons on the nunchuk in Zelda!! too dumb to be true!!! too dumb!!!!!!!!!! i could totally see microsoft entering the handheld market with an idea like this, though to compete with gaming systems like the NGP and 3DS :V RE: New Console: The Nintendo Feel - Woppet* - 05-04-2011 There's already a strong rumor that Pikmin 3 will be a release title on the new Nintendo console. RE: New Console: The Nintendo Feel - Maxpphire - 05-04-2011 Honestly I can see the screen working well for like card games, I just hope they can think of more useful things for it as well. |
