Tried that, and a bunch of other things, still not getting any new Pokemon. I think my copy of the game is just broken :/

Delete it and re-download it, sure you'll lose a lot of pokemon but at least you'll be able to progress.

haha, I was just about to do that, and then I saw the little blue circle in the corner of the game's icon. Somehow I managed to fix it.
