While that's true, I don't see the harm in discussing it really. There might not be consistent plot but Ninty bothered to bring back these characters, so they're worth a mention.

It's entertaining, just like Mario games themselves. Why do we play/buy the same damn thing 20 times since 1985? I don't know either.
I will admit, though, that franchises like Zelda (Hyrule Historia anyone?) or Metroid are more a subject for discussion.

but come on, it is obvious these were called siblings to actually avoid any kind of explanation such as "with who did bowser make out in order to have children" or "is there a Ms Bowser?"
that is basically how you managed side characters in the 80's-90's.
its like trying to make some sort of canon as to who are mario and luigi's parents, seeing they were basically spawned out of nowhere.

I disagree about them having no personality. Their general design already gave them some, and their animations in the NSMB games only gave them more. It's subtle, but it's there.
