The helmet is that weird yellow because it apes the existing spaceman in Battleblock. I assume they probably went with that shade of yellow because it probably looks decent with the ingame color filtering on.
...Also just realized that 1930's cartoon eyes always have the triangle-cut always facing forward. I'll fix that later when I get home. Or in a few minutes after I solve these riddles of employment.
Pick up Battleblock if you can sometime during the holiday sale. It's still $3.75 (75% off) but it dips as low as 90% off.

I'd reccomend drawing the characters' heads from scratch if you want them to match the Battleblock aesthetic - which basically means extreme simplification.

I might do that. The main reason I used a base was because I thought it'd be funny to have the really detailed look in a cartoony game.

I think they both look pretty good ingame, honestly. My favorite little detail, which might be harder to see when playing, is the little puff of smoke. If you look really closely, you'll be able to see it while playing at all times, and he somehow manages to defy gravity and continue puffing in the midst of backflips too.
Also, I know the pipe is black, but ingame it's easier to see that it's a pipe coming out of his mouth with the hole in it and everything. C:
And I wasn't sure how to make the coloration of the bill not look weird.
