Then go away and/or don't post sprites.

No, it's really not a start. It takes very little effort to recolor anything. If it does, you're doing it wrong. Recoloring doesn't help develop spriting skills. At all. It doesn't even help you learn how to pick palettes. At least not anymore than a healthy study of color theory does.

If you wanna become a spriter or at least have the ability to make sprites, you need to practice both customs and edits. But to do that, you need to get a good grasp on form, shape, definition, and of course, color. Edits are fine, but don't just add a limb or paste Mario's head onto Pikachu's body and call it a sprite. And don't just rotate Sonic's leg 25 degrees clockwise and call that art either. Try and be a bit more original and put more effort into what you do.

If you're gonna post "sprites" here, you're indirectly labeling yourself a spriter and you're showing us stuff juss to be criticized. We can't criticize recolors and minor edits, so don't bother showing them off as if we're gonna praise you, okay?

either way, edits take 0 talent to do, and no one really likes to see them. recolors are even worse bro
I don't agree about what you said about edits. Not all edits are shitty, and just like everything else, you need to look in the right place for them.
i never said they were shitty, i said they take 0 talent to do, and no one really likes to see them.

which is 100% true unless you are so talentless that you'll bother to praise someone for edits of sprites that aren't theirs in the first place

RE: Chrome Chimera (Ultimate Chimera edit) - King of Bad Posters - 01-26-2009

Lol recolor i mean common that's just pathetic. You just click on color and bucket anybody or animal can do that. Either do customs or don't post you work cause its boring.

You're cool Cool

RE: Chrome Chimera (Ultimate Chimera edit) - glue - 01-26-2009

I get your point. But no, I couldn't just click on the color bucket, the shades were too similar. Your point is still valid, though.

To no one in specific:
My first post here, sheesh, didn't have to be so aggressive about it. You could have just told me straight up minus all the put-downs, and I would have understood.

Anyways, I decided to make an actual custom sprite. It's my first, so there's no need to insult me about it, a simple "It's bad" will do.
I didn't have any pre-existing characters in mind when I made it, and it's rather simplistic, so it was pretty easy.

I know it's not a very complex sprite, but for what it is, how is it?
About the egg being shaped oddly at the top, I wasn't really going for an egg at first, it just happened, and I decided to leave it like that.

RE: Chrome Chimera (Ultimate Chimera edit) - Devicho - 01-26-2009

It would look a lot better if you fixed the shape, though. You're also using way more colors than you need, and there isn't nearly enough contrast between shades.

RE: Chrome Chimera (Ultimate Chimera edit) - glue - 01-26-2009

Yeah, I did notice the shading was pretty hard to notice..
I'll fix the shell and define the shading.

RE: Chrome Chimera (Ultimate Chimera edit) - glue - 02-06-2009

I decided not to "fix" the shape, because I like it how it is. Here's a little something I whipped up, called "flamethrower". No Metal Slug this time, it's completely custom XD
[Image: FlameThrower.gif]

It slides back because I forgot to leave room for the flame. Lol.
This is my first time experimenting with lighting effects-- how are they?

... Sorry for reviving the topic..

RE: Chrome Chimera (Ultimate Chimera edit) - Phantom Killah - 02-06-2009

The lighting effects are actually pretty decent

RE: Chrome Chimera (Ultimate Chimera edit) - Gors - 02-07-2009

looks like you're better animating than spriting. Sure it's important, but even good animations get worse if your shading/outlining skills are poor (having excellent spriting skills and horrid animation skills, too). The tip is... try balancing these skills until you have both good spriting and animating skills.

Since the animation looks alright, I'll comment about the sprite itself. Increase contrast in the shades (make the shading more noticeable) and use less colors. You know, 1000 different colors =/= good sprite. Choosing your colors wisely is important. Use some inner anti-aliasing to make it smoother. Try removing the black outline and shade it, it'll look better if well done. Check some official sprites to see those techniques in action.

You have potential, so continue trying Wink

RE: Chrome Chimera (Ultimate Chimera edit) - glue - 02-07-2009

Thanks for the crits, I'll try those some time. I have alot of experience with animating, good frame rates, etc.

Either way, you're wrong.

RE: Chrome Chimera (Ultimate Chimera edit) - nairenu - 02-07-2009

did u use photoshop for the lighting effects?

and about that "edit being crap thing", is using an existing sprite as a template also an edit?
like this... made by Meh, btw XD Disgaea style Heart

RE: Chrome Chimera (Ultimate Chimera edit) - glue - 02-07-2009

No, I didn't use photoshop. I simply chose lighter/darker shades, and the yellow equivalent of the original color, then placed them pixel by pixel.
