Except for the trophies, there will be dozens of competitions going on at a time, you don't need those.

sprite duels were usually 1 on 1 competitions based on a certain theme chosen by the people spriting and when theyre both done, people would vote on which is better

Pretty much, it's like this:
Bob: I can sprite a Luma better than you can
Fred: NO WAI
Bob: YA WAI
Fred: It's on!
Bob: YA RLY
Fred: Stop that.
And after that, they both make sprites, post them on a topic, and let people vote on who wins. Of course, an adverse effect of having this would be varying skill levels, and thus, there'd probably be some harshness toward new users in there.

I support it, but I fear that people will not be motivated. Why enter a contest if there is nothing to win. On the other hand, the winning could be the fact that you beat the other entries. Proving your worth to the other spriters is a great reward within itself, so I would enter.
