Wish me luck.
WHAT I'M CURRENTLY WATCHING:
TRIGUN (I'm only on episode 13 so far)
Ok. Let's get this right out of the bag.
Trigun is a story that asks the question "what if Jesus was a peace-loving gunslinger in a Wild West planet filled with ancient technology."
That's what Vash is. He's Jesus, but with added doubt and angst, humanified. And before anyone says I'm crazy, this is something well-known- the author of the Trigun comics was that rare man in Japanese society, a Christian. In the opposite site, Legato has clear demonic associations. They don't even try to hide it. His first episode is named "Diablo". (Yes, I know the Diablo is meant to be Vash himself, but wasn't Jesus himself almost tempted by the devil? Vash also reminds me of Saramago's book "The Gospel of Jesus Christ", in which Jesus' motivation is given as being the attempt to repent for Joseph's sin [of knowing Herodes was going to kill all the children, but doing nothing to warn the other families].) The Jesus parallel has two other strong vertents- Vash's use of Lost Technology, which is presented as a Deus proxy, and the way he is treated by the populace, hated by everyone and with a fame of a rioter and problem-maker, until people actually meet him.)
Ok, so, Trigun. I remember this airing on tv when I was 10, but I was busy watching Evangelion, so I've never watched this until now. It's pretty damn great. I'm loving all the characters and the way they evolve- Vash with his dark past he tries to hide by being a clown, Milly the innocent naive girl, Meryl the judgemental girl, and the badass Priest.
I think the character I'm enjoying the most is Meryl, actually. She's a very stubborn, judgemental girl, who has her ideas made and refuses to accept something different. See how much time it took for her to admit that the blonde buffoon they were encountering so much was Vash. But then, we see her character slowly evolving; in a later episode, Vash accepts a job to kill someone. When Meryl discovers this, she quickly concludes he was a villain all along and gets ready to shoot him, but then stands down and asks for the whole context of the mission. CHARACTER EVOLUTION!!!
More on Trigun when I watch the next 13 episodes
ALSO I'M READING: MYSTERIOUS GIRLFRIEND X
I had been wondering for a long while why there were certain series I liked when they had everything to make me hate them. I mean, I liked Lucky Star and K-On because they were stupid and made me laugh, but generally I hate the whole "JAPANESE HIGH SCHOOL THE MAIN CHARACTER SITS ON THE BACK NEXT TO THE WINDOW" deal.
But there are two manga, I've read for stupid reasons at first, that got me hooked despite fitting into this pattern of sorts- Masturbation Master Kurosawa (I'll speak of this some other time) and Mysterious Girlfriend X, which I started reading literally because I like how the author draws faces.
I later realised this has to do with the audience. You see, japanese comics have 5 main audiences. There's children comics (Doraemon and the such, brilliant stuff), Shonen (for young boys- Dragon Ball, One Piece, etc.), Shoujo (for young girls- Sailor Moon, Mermaid Melody, etc), Seinen (for older/adult men, stuff like Chobits, Battle Angel Alita, and anything done by Masamune Shirow), and Josei (older/adult women, stuff like Honey and Clover).
I quickly realised that my favourite series were mostly on the Seinen audience. Stuff like Alita, Ghost in the Shell, Akira. Masturbation Master is definitely Seinen; and so's Mysterious Girlfriend X. These stories often give more focus on character interaction, mature plotting, sexuality, etc.
So what's Mysterious Girlfriend X about? Well, you got a 16-year-old, Tsubaki, and a girl recently transferred to his class, Urabe. Urabe has a tendency to sleep during the breaktimes, and she's the kind of girl who drools while sleeping. One time, Tsubaki decides to taste her drool- and quickly becomes so addicted he becomes sick. Urabe realises what has happened and explains the situation, revealing that unlike Tsubaki suggests there's no sci-fi in this -she doesn't drool drugs- the deal is, he is in love with her, so he became addicted to her bodily fluids (lawlawlawlawlawlawl). They establish a routine where everyday after school she gives him a fingerfull of drool, and the manga goes to accompany their relation, and how they both start to discover sexuality and desire for one another.
It's being adapted for an anime now, which is adding extra focus on the fetish bodily fluid parts. Not that the manga isn't fetish-y in itself. Personally I suggest it to everyone, as IMHO the fun part is seeing their relation and how Tsubaki deals with wanting a normal girlfriend but instead having Urabe. Plus his dreams are amazing.
Oh and also Urabe tends to have a pair of scissors on her panties, that she uses to cut stuff up. Like any plant and poster around Tsubaki if he hugs her without her permission, or his porn magazines. She's possessive! He's also possessive too, so it works out.
It's nice.
RE: chinese cartoons - ~Axis~ - 06-01-2012
Did everyone notice how most of the old chinese cartoons/animes have wierd character artwork in the biginning and gradually improve? Like in DBZ. In the Sayian saga, Vegeta looked wired as HELL! They all also looked a bit more cartoonish. In the Majin Buu saga, they all look MUCH better in comparison to the Sayian saga, and everything looks less cartoony.
RE: chinese cartoons - puggsoy - 06-01-2012
That's refinement, my friend. It's like Asterix and Obelix:
RE: chinese cartoons - Mutsukki - 06-01-2012
That's how improvement works...? It's not a difficult concept to grasp. You do a lot of the same thing, you get better at it, generally.
In Dragon Ball's case, the first half of the manga is very cartoony and kinda comedy-like. The second half is all battles, powers and muscles, the art style needed some change. But I'm pretty sure that just his natural growth.
RE: chinese cartoons - Tellis - 06-02-2012
I guess this could also go in the movie thread but whatever!
Finally got around to watching Akira. Man that was some craaaaazy stuff, though I really enjoyed it. Kinda thought that that there was maybe a little bit too much left unexplained? Or maybe I'm just too dumb to understand the deeper meaning. Oh also
I felt really bad for Kaori, Tetsuo's girlfriend, because all she does is cling to him and then get herself beaten up and then killed (by Tetsuo!), even though all she wanted was for him to be okay. I mean, I guess I get that she can be seen as a sort of "this is what happens to those close to you when you abuse power" sort of thing, but they were still damn rough with her as a character... Also, the whole political thing with the rebellion leader and the colonel and the council was vague as crap, but I think that was on purpose because it wasn't the main point of the story.
But yeah, really cool movie. The DVD I watched was scratched to hell because it was a library copy, so I may be missing something due to it skipping and me not realizing it.
I want that motorcycle.
RE: chinese cartoons - Joseph Styling - 06-02-2012
A lot was unexplained since it's a manga adaptation and a movie on top of that. So they had to cut a few things out.
RE: chinese cartoons - Tellis - 06-02-2012
Oh, right, that makes sense. That didn't even cross my mind last night, whoops.
Would you say the manga is worth reading, though?

Holy shit, managed to stumble upon the Lupin III pilot on youtube. Currently watching it right now.
RE: chinese cartoons - ~Axis~ - 06-04-2012
Does anyone still watch Yu-Gi-Oh?
RE: chinese cartoons - puggsoy - 06-05-2012
Wish I could. It was awesome, but once that pharaoh guy or whatever came in and it got all super-serious (like you can die when you lose a match), that's when it started to be less cool.

So, the first episode?
Also deadly Yu-Gi-Oh is the best one, trust me.

In equation form:
If: Yu-Gi-Oh = DBZ... It sucks...
I guess most of the anime in this world have a tendancy to get serious over time.
I still play the trading card game every now and then. How about you guys?

The first season, with Pegasus, was nice. After that when the portable hologram machines are released by Kaiba Corp, that's also cool. Even the Egyptian God Cards were OK. But it's when the deadliness happened that it was getting slightly too serious for me.
I'm not saying it became horrible after that, it's still Yu-Gi-Oh. It's just that what I find annoying in anime is when some harmless game like Duel Monsters is created, and then after a while it becomes so serious that the fate of the world rests on it. Same thing with Bakugon (although I've never properly watched that).
Now Beyblade, that was OK. As far as I can remember, the original series (with Tyson and Dragoon) didn't get any more serious that world tournaments with prize money. The new series is pretty annoying though, what with whirlwinds coming to destroy cities because of some guy with spiky hair and leather boots (I haven't seen much of the new ones either, though). However that's as bad because, as far as I can tell, it's set in a totally different universe than the originals.
However, all of this rambling is a bit pointless. It's been a while since I've seen any of these, so I can't exactly remember what I did and didn't like about them. It's just that, in my personal opinion, a toy made of plastic or a card held in a cool way between two fingers shouldn't be able to decide the fate of the Earth. That's all.

If I had my cards I'd play it, but we left them back in NZ (I have no idea why). I have the PC game, but it's just not the same. When we get back I'll be sure to have some duels, the only people I can play with are my siblings, but that's cool.
