as seen here, I'd rather make the cat-ears and tail as a separate object and programmed to be like a 'cap', really. It would be dumb to waste so much effort with that if there's an easier and better-looking way to do so.

I mean, the differences don't stand out that well. I'd think it would be very easy to miss whether you are powered up or not if you weren't paying attention for a moment. Or if you just paused the game for a while and forgot because your short-term memory is really bad.

Not what I meant. I can't believe I'm going to say this... but I wouldn't have mentioned anything if Gors did just make a recolor for the powerup.
A recolor may be rock bottom on the easy simple changes scale, but it usually makes it loud and clear that a change of state has in fact happened.

The closest mario powerup I can think of to whats going on here are the ones from Super Mario land 2 and they are more visible than those tiny cat ears, despite being simpler changes.

I would like to say that the ears aren't very readable as a powerup even though they're clear as a sprite, but I'm not sure if I'm using the term readable correctly here.

I'm gonna have to side with Terminal on this actually. I honestly did not notice that there were ears and a tail until Gorsal mentioned it. When you're actually playing the game and seeing it all in action you might be able to tell better that changes have taken place, so maybe it isn't an issue. I just wasn't able to tell right away.

Possible fix: make the ears MUCH BIGGER. Like maybe 2x bigger.

i was eventually going to do that after all the C+Cs, but considering that the first SML didn't change you whatsoever when you got the fire flower, i don't think it's such a big deal.

I'll be honest, I didn't notice them at first, either. However, they are just how they should be considering the main concept here. Making them a tad bigger might help them to stand out more, though.

Either way, cuteness overload. If Devicho would post one of her adorable drawings now, my sensors might just explode Nervous
