Hello gents - if you would so kindly allow me to participate in the discussion regarding the origins of Yoshi's saddle. I would like to remind you that I am a seasoned Yoshologist.

I've received my doctorate in Yoshi lexicon, versed both in official canon and speculative "fanon" from "Luna's Neo Yoshi Aurorium" in 1996. The NYA is a prestiged institute which, sadly, has degraded over the years, now home to poor sods who choose to intensely fetishize over the Yoshi character. Once again, let us discuss the growth on Yoshi's lower back, which has been the hotbed of controversy for many a diehard Nintendo fan.

As it pains me so, I must agree with Kriven's statement:

Isn't Yoshi actually supposed to be some kind of Koopa-related creature? His saddle is really a highly stylized shell (it's even stupidly round in some games), and he's the only "good" character capable of using the Parawings.

I'm pretty sure I remember an interview where Miyamoto talked about Yoshi as being a "good Koopa". At least during the conceptual stages.

Allow me to present exhibit A: Yoshi's likeness, present and observable in Super Mario World.

Please, take note of Yoshi's back, sternly, and pose to yourself the question: what the actual subjective fuck is this thing supposed to be?
Well, that's easy - it's an offshoot of Exhibit B1: the Rexes, the other dinosaur from Super Mario World.
Now, take a look at this thing, and take a look at Mario dominating the shit out of it and his next-of-kin. Note that they possess many of the same features of Yoshi - a rounded nose, slightly arced backs, spikes. However, it bears other things use primarily for self-defense: a horn, fangs and a set of wings. However, they're some of the first characters Mario encounters and defeats, and are found primarily on Yoshi's Island. I think you see where I'm getting at. We'll return to this later.

Lettuce also view another denizen of Dinosaur Land, the Dino Rhino: Exhibit B2. This gent has nothing to do with Yoshi, but he's green and has spikes on his back.
I have no argument over this sorry character what the fuck is this thing.
Let's return to Yoshi:

Now, if the object on his back is a saddle, this begs the question: who domesticated the Yoshi species?

The answer is no one. They're merely poor sods called out by evolution, similar to horses...except its fate was spelled out from the beginning, due to its small shell and equine stature; a generally sad, helpless folk and the poor thing was limited to the dozens, only to make a verbal pact with Mario upon its discovery. Which begs the question: who the hell taught these dinosaurs to speak and act beyond instinct?

Now, remember these guys?

These "Rex" creatures overran Yoshi's Island, dashing like madmen around the island like they owned the place, until Mario came into the picture.
The truth behind the matter is there was yet another driving force here: Bowser and his seven adopted children were just seeking refuge, allowing natural selection to continue as normal with more suitable denizen to make their place in the Dinosaur Land ecosystem, all while colonizing the area to make life sustainable for the remnants of his army (but of course, paying careful respect to the other citizens of the island, such as the Wiggler and the Rex creatures).

Alright look what I'm trying to say is that Yoshi's a sad little shit who asked Mario to aid him in starting a revolution and the fat plumbers assisted in a massive coup d'etat and allowed the Yoshi species to flourish in Dinosaur land so successfully that their expansion to places beyond Dinosaur Land: Isle Delfino, the Mushroom Kingdom, and even outer space and children's literature - meanwhile, the entirety of Dinosaur Land's population was wiped out upon the Yoshi species' greediness. It was a turf war between Yoshis and Rexes, and thanks to some dumpass plumber the Rex species has completely died out and that's why you haven't seen them since SMW. Mario killed them all.

Mario fanboy Wrote:What about the Baby Yoshis, Kosheh?
Look how useless these sorry sods look.
They literally cannot walk at birth. All they can do is waddle and they do it at like a snail's pace.

I don't fucking know. When they're babies their spine is extremely vulnerable...and when Yoshis eat too much their growth cycle rockets forward and they develop protection from the other creatures on the island by developing a protective shell over their most crucial area of their spine, so Mario needs to play Hungry Hungry Hippos to get them to grow and not be shitty babies so he can jump on their back and ride them to further destroy the Dinosaur Land countryside. Who fucking cares about baby Yoshis though maybe if Mario didn't FUCKING FEED THEM ALL we wouldn't HAVE THIS GODAWFUL YOSHI INFESTATION

Mario fanboy Wrote:BUT WHAT ABOUT NEW SUPER MARIO BROS U THEY DONT GROW WHEN YOU FEED THEM
Please shut up. They've been retconned to have different abilities at birth and now they don't grow when you feed that. I guess that's what happens when your populace is no longer dying huh

Oh yeah, and the thing on Yoshi's back is a shell and Yoshi is not a Koopa because he lived there before Koopas were a thing. Mario just saw the depressing little creature and quickly capitalized on the situation and things just kinda worked out for everyone there. Also Yoshi's literally a useless creature in SMW but wasn't in SMW2 (because Yoshi's Island wasn't yet overrun by Koopas and shitty dinosaurs; Koopa turtles were still the vast minority along with Goombas, it was still mostly birds, spiked things and lake monsters)

sorry to waste your time everyone

That's Karma A. Koopa, who is that "canon" Mario character I was talking about. I don't remember the full story about her, but she's apparently Ludwig's boyfriend due to some metbond thing. Basically, it's a kind of parasite that forces the two of them to be close at all times or else they'll feel internal pain and possibly die if they're too far away. Looking back at it now, I feel like it's more of an excuse to have the fangirl who created her have Ludwig as her husband and I'm confused by why she has such high status on the fan site out of all the other OCs anyway (some even better than her).

It gets weirder than that. Remember when I mentioned that Wart was Bowser's brother on Lemmy's Land? Well, he actually used to be a "dragon" Koopa (for lack of a better word), like Bowser. I don't know the exact details, but he was changed into the giant frog you see today due to a magic spell (I think Bowser gave him a frog potion or something). They probably made that as an excuse to explain why Wart's children don't look like frogs.

Anyway, like you said, it would have made a lot more sense to continue the rockstar theme for the fan Koopalings. I don't know about where Nick got his name (heh, nickname *gets bricked*), but it certainly makes sense to name Susan Alice or something like that instead of naming her after Susan B. Anthony of all people. In my opinion, though, the better course of action is not not create her at all since she only exists to give the webmaster's sister her own character on the site. Since the webmaster acts as Lemmy Koopa on that place, I don't see why it's unreasonable for her to use Wendy O. Koopa or something. Then again, telling a fan not to create a fan/original character is like telling the fan to jump off a bridge. *Shrugs*

While I like Lemmy's Land, I'm not in any rush to see it ever come back since it hasn't updated in two years or so. Besides the fact that the countless stories have plot ideas that don't make any sense, it gets weirder when the users have to jump through multiple hoops just so that their original ideas and movie parodies mesh with the Mario universe (trying to meet the relatively strict Mario quota for Lemmy to post it on the main site has that effect).

I've taken to referring to Bowser's specific breed (Bowser, the Koopalings, the Koopa Kids) as "King Koopas". Reasons: common nomenclature in real animals (King Crab, for example), and wordplay with the character's personal moniker.

RE: What Character would you like to see in a Smash Bros Game? - psychospacecow - 04-29-2015

...I'm gonna be honest. I was kind of hoping somewhere in the back of my mind that Mario of all things didn't have self-insert fanon characters with unexplained mary sueness and relationships.

Any fictional universe that is famous/popular enough will have those """""original""""" characters. this is an internet constant, much like rule 34 and cat image macros.

Ah, but we have! They co-exist in the Beanbean Kingdom. Oddly enough, Yoshis do reside in the BeanBean Kingdom too, but they mostly chill in the Yoshi Theatre. You have any explanations on THIS one, Yoshi Expert???

(I wanted to post here and campaign for Chester Barklight from Tales of Phantasia aka literally the most obvious character to include in any Super Smash Bros game but ffs that Kosheh post was literal gold.)

I wouldn't exactly say they co-exist because the Rexes mostly keep to themselves up on Hoohoo Mountain, which is quite a distance away from the Yoshi Theatre.

Also, while I'm not much of a Yoshi expert, I can tell you that it's likely that the owner of the theatre, Boddle, had them imported/invited to the theatre as guests of honor. I think there's an NPC that says that Yoshis also live in the Beanbean Kingdom, but it's likely that the Yoshi Theatre is not their natural habitat. On top of that, there's nothing in the game that confirms that the Yoshis live in the exact same area as Rexes.

Oh oops I forgot the Mario and Luigi series actually existed. And I didn't say I was a Rex expert just a Yoshi one u_u

But it's okay that's an easy one. E-man pretty much hit upon it: The Rex dinosaurs weren't entirely wiped out, I suppose - those one or two you missed jumping on in SMW must have emigrated to Hoohoo Mountain, their numbers dwindling. Meanwhile, the Yoshis at the theatre in Beanbean Kingdom, contrary to the NPC's statement are most likely Dinosaur Land residents. There might be an expat or two, but most of them are probably there on vacation. They're still exotic enough, after all, to have a whole theatre erected in their honor (Boddle must have loved the SHIT out of them can anyone confirm if Boddle's wife is a Yoshi if so that's kinda fucked up)

Also, should be mentioned: Yoshi's Island is literally an island in the whole of Dinosaur Land. For argument's sake, the Rex population was wiped off of YOSHI'S ISLAND, not the entirety of Dinosaur Land (but still worthy of noting, as Rex is primarily found on Yoshi's Island)

The Rexes also appear in Super Princess Peach but who cares about that game the plot is literally "Bowser overpowers Mario and Luigi armed with only a Hitachi massager"

RE: What Character would you like to see in a Smash Bros Game? - Kriven - 04-30-2015

Well, the Yoshi are a sentient race... it's hard to tell exactly where their natural habitat would be, because they can freely travel wherever they please. Every instance of a Yoshi out in the world that we've seen has them treated like any other citizen.

I imagine Rexes also at least register somewhere as a high-intelligence species, as most things seem to do in Mario Land (er, World? Country?), so it's possible some individual Rexes have also traveled to the Bean Bean Kingdom.

Not even in the RPGs do they show Rexes with anything resembling sentience as far as I know. I'm not saying that they're not, but as far as the Mario canon goes, they could have either migrated there like normal animals do, or someone decided to repopulate Hoohoo Mountain with them for whatever reason. Heck, for all we know, they may as well be some type of subspecies of Rex with minimal differences at most that is native to the Beanbean Kingdom.

EDIT: By the way, Kriven, this is slightly unrelated, but when you mentioned Country to describe Mario's world, I couldn't help but think of Mario and Donkey Kong crossover that actually does a better job of touching upon elements of DK's games.
