RE: Key's Thread for Showing Off My Art Things - Kosheh - 07-16-2015

I have a lil criticism, but I'll keep it constructive!! My apologies if I'm unhelpful or come off as kind of a dick!!!

It looks like you're gettin' faces down C: but what kinda caught my attention was her waist. I notice her shirt ends a little high and her skirt a little low. I assume that's the bottom of the character's stomach, but given how it ends sharply and just around the character's hips, it kind of looks like the character's pelvis (which is probably not the intent). If I'm wrong and it is the character's pelvis, while it stays true to rules of anatomy, the end result looks a little...campy.
I just noticed the character's wearing a vest over a blouse. If you're thinking about returning to this piece - OK, I'd assume a schoolgirl would tuck their blouse into their miniskirt, with parts of the blouse hanging over the waist of the miniskirt. You could try using the blouse to cover this part of her stomach/pelvic area. Just be careful how you present it - if you don't draw the creases of the tucked-in shirt properly, it might end up looking like a beer belly. Tongue

The other thing is the mug of beer. I can tell that you spent the most time on the character's face and the arm holding the beer glass (which, that arm is spot-on) but then the beer glass looks like a quick job.
I'm not sure exactly where to go with suggesting it, but if you're considering revisiting that as well -
- A beer mug typically has a base, with the content "housed" inside
- The head of the beer typically has a foamy look, like bubble bath, or a cloud (you had the right idea with the original sketch you erased; the cylinder you used to form the beer mug was pointed a little too downward tho)
- For maximum beery effect, you could draw a few bubbles in the beer mug, to give it a carbonated look

but ye, as Gors said - you're still learning (and we're all eternally students of art) so d/w, just take these as kinda...pointers for the next time I guess lol.
Oh, yeah: if you're sketching something you're not familiar with, it's OK to sketch it a lot lighter so it's easier to erase later! Once you're comfortable with the shape you can apply a little more pressure to those finalized lines.

EDIT: Is that Vipershark in the background? lol

RE: Key's Thread for Showing Off My Art Things - Keychain - 07-16-2015

No it's not Vipershark lol. It's just a placeholder character.

Thanks a lot for the criticism. It was really helpful. Though she's not a school girl (which doesn't really matter when she's wearing what is essentially school girl attire.)

What do you mean by "campy?" btw? It is her pelvis area. It's her V-line and belly button. Sorry if that seems kinda lewd?? Idk, not really my intention to be lewd when drawing these but I just really love drawing belly buttons and v-lines.

I think "lewd" is probably the word I meant; I assume now by the "v-line" you're referring to the shape formed when people are really muscular, where their lower ab muscles are just under their stomach and they flex their obliques. It forms a V-shape.

I thought it was another area with a uh, "v-line", given how sharply it comes to a point and its whereabouts in your illustration - that's why I was like "uhm, are you sure you're not missing part of the skirt there?" lol

The other thing is that the character's muscles are not that well-defined either, so the not-muscular body with a sudden v-line is kinda like "oh, she's suddenly toned, but in one area" and it's totally throwing me off

RE: Key's Thread for Showing Off My Art Things - Keychain - 07-16-2015

I think another word for it is the groin?? I don't really know. It's something that anime artstyles sometimes emphasize a lot.

It's basically the V shape that forms between the torso and pelvis caused by the skin pressing against each other. I don't really know how to explain it. But it's definitely not exclusive to muscular people. I mean maybe it is IRL but I don't really know LOL this is embarassing

If that is the case, it looks like you put her belly button down too low, as you can see in those pieces.

A-Ah.. thank you.. Though the whole v-shape situation has me quite embarassed. I'm so lucky to have so many informative and helpful people around me.

I whipped something up real quick using your advice. I don't like how it came out though. Will probably redo this pose multiple times until I'm happy with it.

RE: Key's Thread for Showing Off My Art Things - Garamonde - 07-17-2015

Don't be embarrassed. I had this happen once where I posted a drawing I did on paper (my pencil-to-paper skills pale in comparison to my digital art ability, at least IMO). It was of a nude girl posing, and someone posted references on how to draw boobs. That actually embarrassed me as well but I just went on with the show.

Heck, I still struggle doing the basics too so don't feel bad. I figure that since people learn things in different ways and at different paces, it isn't bad that you wouldn't have as much experience on this type of thing. I think if anything it's good that you tried something different! Maybe it didn't quite work out the first time but that's okay. What does, really? Just keep at it and we'll help you improve on whatever it is you need help with. Cute

Keep up the good work by the way! That new version is much better!

Something I whipped up while watching SF4 finals at EVO

RE: Key's Thread for Showing Off My Art Things - Gors - 07-20-2015

this is the same thing as the upper drawing

imagine this pose inside a box, and go fixing your perspective/foreshortening within that box
