I think the whole third party thing should be reconsidered. Why does Capcom and probably Konami have characters from two different franchises, but SEGA has to stick with Sonic characters only? Why can't SEGA be like the others and use two franchises?

Yeah, to be honest, there really isn't a third party Sega character that would work out as a playable character. Except maybe Toejam and Earl because they're probably the most well-known "Sega" characters.

Alex Kidd the original mascot of SEGA. NiGHTS a long respected series. Ai Ai from Super Monkey Ball.

More people know who Toejam and Earl is than Alex Kidd.
And please don't use the "Marth and Roy" excuse because Japan knew extensively who they were. I'm pretty sure neither Japan nor America remember who the heck Alex Kidd is.
