RE: TSR PokeDex Project - stache - 04-03-2011

Is it just me or does Hokoot seem like psyduck? Anyways, I really love the designs for both of them, and I think it's safe to say that most people here would agree. I'll edit this post with some sketches later today.

Hmmmm....
Bear in mind, it's not the final design

RE: TSR PokeDex Project - stache - 04-03-2011

Ya, the whole hurting head thing, and water/psychic, which psyduck basically is. The appearance doesn't worry me, the concept does.

"WAIT WHAT"

Let me explain guys. Types don't necessarily reflect the species of a Pokemon but more of their habits or habitats than their species. Sandshrew is certainly not made of dirt! But Sandshrew live in it and dig in it, therefor that is their type.

Let's take a look at Trapinch who is based off a bug... but isn't a bug type. Trapinch is pure ground and evolves into a Dragon type. Why is this? Take a look at this interesting read:
http://bulbanews.bulbagarden.net/wiki/On_the_Origin_of_Species:_Trapinch,_Vibrava_and_Flygon

Back to Hummingbirds... They have a lot in common with flying insects. The way they flap their wing and fly backwards, and the fact that various species even evolved to look like bumble bees! this is only a suggestion but maybe the Hummingbird could be a Bug type because of its bug-like behavior.

Then again, Hummingbirds live their lives by the flower, so it could go either way.

I understand what you are saying but if you are going to make a humming bird, you should make it a bird. A flying/bug type could be shown through a number of interesting irl insects and what not, so making it a humming bird seems like not only a waste at something that could have been original and interesting, but a bit of a stretch.

RE: TSR PokeDex Project - stache - 04-03-2011

I also agree that we should definitely make the hummingbird as Grass/Flying. It isn't based off a bug, because it's an actual bird in real life.

RE: TSR PokeDex Project - Koopaul - 04-03-2011

No it would still be a bird obviously but it would be empowered by the element of Bug. I suppose we could just give it a bunch of bug type moves instead.

Just remember type does not have to do with species. Piplup is a Bird but it is not a Flying type. Egg Groups have more to do with what the Pokemon physically is:

http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Egg_group

As you can see Gligar is a Bug Egg Group despite being a Ground/ Flying type. Gligar is based of a Bug but isn't a Bug type, showing that types don't reflect species.

This is just for future reference. The Hummingbird can stay Grass. But keep this in mind.

RE: TSR PokeDex Project - stache - 04-04-2011

Here is my newest set of sketches. A mud pig family with a grass orientation. Types would probably me ground+normal. However, they would have grass moves, and the final stage could probably learn leaf blade.

Info of each:

Pigglirt, Ground/Normal. A very shy pig, it has a diet of dirt and mud. It can sometimes be mistaken for a leaf when laying on the ground, and if people get too close, it will scurry away.

Borsoil, Ground/Normal. It spends most of its time sleeping, saving energy for evolving. It can be usually found in fields sleeping, and are pests to farmers as they eat all the dirt around their crops. [Exclusive moves= Rest, Sleep talk, Recover, Uproar, Snore]

Porking, Ground/Normal. A natural and fearless warrior, Porking has an armor of remarkably strong foliage. Its quick and ferocious leaf blade attacks make it a danger when hiking. [Exclusive moves= Leaf storm, Leaf Blade, Focus Punch, Elemental Punches]

A redesign of Hokoot. A little more baby koot-like, less Psyduck.
The design for Pokoot is good the way it is.

RE: TSR PokeDex Project - stache - 04-05-2011

It's not as much the design as the concept that worries me. The concept can be easily changed though. It's just with the whole "head hurting" and "psychic" orientation, it resembles the concept of Psyduck.

Anyways, any thoughts on the pig line?

RE: TSR PokeDex Project - ~DrakoRero~ - 04-05-2011

I kinda like the pig idea if you ask me ^^

Does anyone think that the other ninja Pokemon should stay a Tanuki? or should it be another Pokemon and the other ninja becomes a different animal?

RE: TSR PokeDex Project - Geekz_R_us - 04-05-2011

I really like the new Hokoot design. Reminds me of Natu some reason Big Grin
I also like the pigs, but why is it a ground and normal? Though Porking needs some... Pizzaz, yah know. Maybe a vine or something attached to it? Blank

RE: TSR PokeDex Project - Teddy The Elite - 04-05-2011

Why not give him leaves on his shoulders, some behind the head, and maybe even knee leaves?

If we have the same opinions on where each part of the body is, I'm pretty sure he has a leaf on his knees, on his shoulders, and one in front of his head. (Behind is a good idea though). I'll work on them

EDIT:

Is this better? Should I give him a physical weapon? Whip? Beating stick? lol

RE: TSR PokeDex Project - mutantyoshi - 04-05-2011

I think they all need snouts, to me, with just nostrils, it doesn't look right.

RE: TSR PokeDex Project - Teddy The Elite - 04-05-2011

Yeah, try a snout. Other than that, leaves look good.
