RE: What do you dislike? - PenguMasta - 07-11-2010 i hate how people think you get mad when your clearly just telling the truth in a "sort of angry way" on the internet. RE: What do you dislike? - Gwen - 07-12-2010 Was that an attempt at a troll? If so its not really funny :I RE: What do you dislike? - Chutzpar - 07-12-2010 Okay, now I will explain why using gay as a pejorative is a bad thing. Yes, gay did initially mean "happy", but words change. Lesbian originally referred to an inhabitant of Lesvos. Gay has however evolved to mean homosexual. It's just a descriptor. It's not like there's some cabal of gay men who went "I know what'd piss off those breeders, lets make gay mean what we want it to, BWAHAHAHA!" Its first use is thought to have been somewhere in the 30s so you're not going to see that changing any time soon, brah. But the use of the word gay as a pejorative is directly as a result from its use to describe homosexuals. The implication is that being gay is a bad thing. It's the same way it's not very nice to use the word "retarded" or "lame" (which I'm really guilty of and I'm trying to address!), it's making a value judgment on a group of people by using it as an insult. Saying "HEY GAY MEANS HAPPY THOSE GAYS HAVE RUINED IT" is fucking... I don't even know. It makes you sound tremendously privileged, for one thing. The "words have all the power you give them!" is a very poor argument. The meaning and the intention of words are a powerful thing. COOL STORY, BRO: I have some friends who are gay (this is relevant). I've been described as an honorary dyke by some of my friends, and when they say it, it's nice, because it's an in-joke that's just kind of become part of our vernacular. Being called a dyke by a stranger at school (this happened with alarming regularity, my school ruled!), is kind of a different thing. Especially when it's accompanied by threats to "straighten you out", or having dog shit thrown at your head! RE: What do you dislike? - Alpha Six - 07-12-2010 I hate using the word "gay" to describe something lame/shitty/etc, but at the same time it's habitual and I'm trying to break that habit. ): I WENT TO PUBLIC SCHOOL SO IT'S NOT THAT EASY RE: What do you dislike? - GrooveMan.exe - 07-12-2010 I dislike the vague yet ever present expected social standards for black and gay people; and that I have to constantly keep up an air of "oh yeah, it doesn't bother me at all, whateverrrr" when largely it's either a non-issue or something that doesn't need to be brought up. At the same time I heavily dislike myself for occasionally displaying said social standards, and I would quite happily take a potato peeler to my soul to strip away the facets of me I really can't stand. Oh yeah, and I dislike how I'm bad at videogames. Irony isn't funny. =| RE: What do you dislike? - Asther - 07-12-2010 (07-12-2010, 03:02 AM)Flannel_Bastard Wrote: Was that an attempt at a troll? yes..............i was ''''''trolling''''''' fuck u, I dislike misuse of the word "troll" And also when I am viewing this forum and only the header loads AGH WHY DOES THIS HAPPEN sooo much also, losing is the best part of video games. Wait, so am I still in the wrong? or is this you acknowledging my apology and seeing where the real problem lay? Because your right I hate idiots who pretend things they are not, and cause social unrest under that "title" validating their say, or at least trying to. I also hate how hard it is to find a full-time summer job now. Like holy hell who's HP do I gotta heal to get a job around here?
