I had an idea once for Surround Screen Television.

But, to keep on topic: 3D may be a gimmick, but every form of entertainment being sold is a gimmick one way or the other anyhow, think about it. The Wii having motion control? Gimmick. The "better" HD widescreen television? Gimmick. "New" movies with "Award-winning [insert something here]"? Gimmick. HD compatible gaming systems? Gimmick. Anything that stands out between products with similar uses can almost always be traced to a gimmick of some sort. So why is a "gimmick" such a bad thing?

Gimmicks with enough exposure and support become staples.

I remember when touch screens (as an input medium, let alone on handelds) was a gimmick.

Indeed, so again I ask: What's so bad about a gimmick?

RE: 3DS Impressions - PrettyNier - 03-24-2011

everything is a gimmick.

RE: 3DS Impressions - Chutzpar - 03-24-2011

We could argue about what is and isn't a gimmick until the cows come home. Ultimately, if 3D was the only thing the 3DS had going for it, I could see the point, but from my understanding there's also been some hardware improvements? I'll freely admit to not being particularly clued up about this - I don't really have to be, since this'll be my first DS, how it compares to previous versions is pretty immaterial to me.
Or, basically:

The 3D option is just a bonus to me.

I'm sure there will be plenty of games that don't make good use of the 3d, just as there were plenty of games that never made good use of the motion controls of the Wii, that doesn't make 3D an inherently bad idea. It could still open up opportunities for developers to do new things, and that's always good.

Yes, there have.

Haha, oh man.
That part of my post totally looks like I was joking, now.

SLIGHTLY MORE EXCITED FOR TONIGHT THAN I WAS PREVIOUSLY.
Getting it at midnight like a boss B)

RE: 3DS Impressions - X Gamer 66 - 03-24-2011

I didn't realize Europe was getting it tomorrow.. jealousy ;3;

RE: 3DS Impressions - Candescence - 03-24-2011

Lucky you, us Aussies have to wait until thursday next week until we get it. I've already got mine pre-ordered with Rayman 3D.

RE: 3DS Impressions - Woppet* - 03-25-2011

I have one, Don't have any games though but i had a good chance to check out the 3D on some of the preinstalled software.
I honestly like it a lot, it doesn't feel gimicky, and the area you can move in in front of the screen and still see a sharp 3D imagine is larger than you might think.

RE: 3DS Impressions - GrooveMan.exe - 03-25-2011

I went to the midnight launch with my friend, and got the opportunity to actually play with the hardware - I kept missing it being demoed in store.

The 3D is surprisingly unintrusive. You notice it, but it's not IN YOUR FACE BLARG, which I can appreciate. Like everyone else, I adore the AR technology. The shooting minigame they give you is actually a lot of fun. The way they got the surface the card was on to warp was very cool.

Played a bit of Street Fighter 4 also. Since I was playing the PC version all day, I took to it quite well. All the features were present and correct, EX Skills and all. It looked very good scaled down, though the 3D felt misplaced. It wasn't bad, It just could have been implimented a little more interestingly...

RE: 3DS Impressions - Woppet* - 03-25-2011

The face raiders is ridiculously fun, and a great way to show people the 3D potential.
Also, augmented reality is really fucking cool.

It takes like a picture of whatever you're pointing at, and puts like targets around the room and shit for you to shoot at.
And the ground will bend stuff will explode, it's awesome.

RE: 3DS Impressions - X Gamer 66 - 03-25-2011

Is it true you can take 3D pictures? How do those look?

RE: 3DS Impressions - Woppet* - 03-25-2011

Like regular pictures.
But with an extra D.

Nah, they're cool. You take a picture of your room and look at it in the 3DS and it looks like the screen is a window to a box, which contains a smaller version of your room.

I didn't see if anyone else posted this and if anyone did then I'm sorry for double posting but this made me laugh.

Also, according to this guy, we haven't seen a stylus used since the early 2000s on palm devices. Thats right folks, the DS and it's stylus never happened.
