If you look at the white parts of the koopa's shell, when he walks it looks like it's blinking to me.

Been having one of my worst art blocks in ages, so I haven't managed to do much stuff.

Actually, yes. But probably not using the overworld sprites as I've only just gotten the hang of platforming in Game Maker 7. Making a game using NSMB graphics right now but I might swap them for customs. Would still probably use the NSMB tileset since I can't make tiles to save my life.

They're meant to be just frontviews, for mapscreens like in the old games (SMB3) where the enemy characters (Hammer Bros) always faced in the same direction. So yeah. I'm lazy too.
