*PLEASE READ* - Submissions Forums for beginners - Ultimecia - 12-23-2009 Submissions Forums for beginners (or “Submitting sprites for Dummies”) Welcome to tSR’s Submissions Forums, I am Ultimecia and I’m writing this guide because many newcomers join the forums everyday to submit their work, and many of them have doubts but are too shy, afraid or clueless to ask. I’m going to keep stuff as simple as I can, but if you still have doubts, feel free to ask. First of all, get your sheets ready. If you don’t know how to rip sprites, you can try our tutorials at the site. There’s also a very good GBA sprite ripping tutorial by Belial right here. Please note that only .png and .gif (static, not animated) formats are accepted, so don’t even think to submit .bmp or .jpg images. Also note that no resized sprites are accepted. Any ripping question can be questioned at the Ripping Questions thread, feel free to stop by and ask around. IMPORTANT! Wrote:After all set, CHECK OUT THE RULES. I can’t really stress how important is that part. If you got a custom, this isn’t your session yet. It’s a forum rule to have a thread at Spriting & Pixel Art forums for critiques, comments and improvement, and only after that you may post your custom. Also, please refer to the Spriting & Pixel Art Rules and don’t post your work as an attachment. - OK, we are all done, let’s submit stuff already! You’ll need a image hosting site. There are plenty of them, and those are some of the best services around: http://www.photobucket.com http://www.imageshack.us http://www.minus.com http://www.pixeljoint.com http://www.tinypic.com http://www.majhost.com http://www.imgur.com http://www.dropbox.com Upload your sheet to any of this image hosting sites, and you’ll eventually get an URL. The URL (Uniform Resource Locator) is the “address” of a page, site or anything on internet that you can reach out using your browser. Select the URL (by selecting it all and pressing Ctrl+C or right click, Copy). It’s going to be something like http://www.somesite.com/yourimage.png , this is your image URL. Then, at the Submissions forums you’re going to see many different sub-forums, each with the name of a system. Just select the appropriate system and click “New Thread”. Name your thread with the game’s name or something like that. If it is a submission to Other Systems (consoles that don’t have their own sub-forums), it’s a nice idea to add which system it is at the name of the thread too. Then, write something. You don’t need to write much if you don’t want to. Just write down your mind (if it is relevant to the sheet, it is). Now on the sheet, it’s time to submit it. There are the “tags” that allows you to make all sorts of things, like writing something in bold or italic or post images, like we are going to do now. We are going to use the img tags. Code: [img](Insert URL here)[/img] Code: [img]http://www.somesite.com/yourimage.png[/img] The result should be something like this: Now you’re done! That’s it! Just click “Post Thread”. Or, if you want to check out your thread before posting it, click “Preview Thread”. - But I want to do better! Okay, tSR got sheet icons, so you can preview what kind of sprites you’re going to find inside. You don’t need to worry about because the site updating crew can do it for you if you don’t know how to do it. But if you want to be a nice person and help them out, this would be much appreciated. You can get the icon templates and the icon maker program at this thread, the icon-making program got a nice tutorial and the icon itself is pretty much self-explanatory. There also is an in-browser icon maker over here. Now you got both the sheet (http://www.somesite.com/yourimage.png ) and the icon (I’m going to call it imageicon.png). Upload both the sheet and the icon. To help you out, I suggest you to put both URL at the notepad program which cames with Windows (Start > Programs > Accessories > Notepad). You’ll have something like the following: http://www.somesite.com/yourimage.png http://www.somesite.com/imageicon.png You can just post both of them like before Code: [img]http://www.somesite.com/yourimage.png[/img] Or you can do it in a fancy way You’re going to use now the URL tag. You can use the URL tag in two ways: associated with text or with the img tag. Code: [url=(the url address goes here)] (something)[/url] An example using text Code: [url=http://www.somesite.com/yourimage.png]My sheet[/url] Simple, fast to load and somewhat bland, right? Now, let’s combine it with what you just learned from the img tag Code: [url=http://www.somesite.com/yourimage.png][img]http://www.somesite.com/imageicon.png[/img][/url] Big, isn’t ? But not too hard. Let’s see how it’s supposed to look like: As you can see I decided to use the character portrait at the icon with a semi-transparency at 50%. You don’t need to do anything like this, just post one of your sprites and you’re good That’s all guys. Thanks for reading this far. TOO LONG! DIDN’T READ! - Save your sheet in .png or static .gif. No .jpg or .bmp - If it is a custom, submit to the Spriting & Pixel Art forums before submitting to the site. - Use one of the image hosting sites mentioned ( try http://imgur.com or http://min.us if you’re too lazy to scroll up) to upload your sheet. - Create the thread at the appropriate forum. - Use the img tag. Code: [img](the image url goes here)[/img] RE: *PLEASE READ* - Submissions Forums for beginners - Wardek - 02-08-2010 Thanks, this is very helpful topic, that help me alot. RE: *PLEASE READ* - Submissions Forums for beginners - Steven - 05-31-2010 Wow! Thanks for the icons and tips! I was a newbie back then though. Heh, heck, I can't make my own icon! Also, thanks for the tips. When I tried sorting the sprites out, they were M-E-S-S-Y! The second time I tried, they were really spaced out. -Steven RE: *PLEASE READ* - Submissions Forums for beginners - Pokaranero - 07-01-2010 I have understood almost everything... But this image not as doing it... You will create it when I offer my sprites or I have to make it I? We don't mind doing the icons but if you do we will appreciate it. Sometimes there are so many stuff without icon, and we might get overhelmed by the submissions (I myself got some 20+ icons to do after my vacations are over +_+) so...Yeah, help IS appreciated. RE: *PLEASE READ* - Submissions Forums for beginners - Hstar - 07-10-2010 So I went on the icon tutorial thingy and because I've got to little computer space I can't download the icon maker that it wants me to use. Can I still upload a sprite sheet? (Will Someone make the icon for me like you said?) Oh wait, I scrolled up and I found the answer - someone will make an icon for me but it will take longer for the sprite sheet to upload, so how much longer? (rough estimate plz) RE: *PLEASE READ* - Submissions Forums for beginners - Ultimecia - 07-10-2010 5 years j/k Usually we do as soon as we are going to upload it, and we usually upload once a week RE: *PLEASE READ* - Submissions Forums for beginners - Hstar - 07-10-2010 (07-10-2010, 01:44 PM)Ultimecia Wrote: 5 years Thanks so much, also just 'cause it's my 1st time. I'm uploading a sprite sheet, I was about to click new thread when I noticed there was already a thread with the game I was doing on it, soe I went on it, but can I still submit my sheet on that (if so how because I'm not sure if I can when I reply to it) or do I still need to create a new thread? It's awesome talkin to a legend, and thanks again! RE: *PLEASE READ* - Submissions Forums for beginners - Ultimecia - 07-10-2010 There's no problem on creating a new thread for an existing game. Some people think it's not nice to 'hijack' a thread with your own submissions (if the thread is about a game I don't see any problem about it, but if we're talking about a "somebody's Submissions Thread" for example it might be rude if you don't ask first). Legend? I wouldn't go that far, there are people here much better than I am :p But thanks ^^; RE: *PLEASE READ* - Submissions Forums for beginners - Hstar - 07-10-2010 (07-10-2010, 02:06 PM)Ultimecia Wrote: There's no problem on creating a new thread for an existing game. Btw sorry 4 asking so many questions but I've done the text, now do I click submit and then will it let me do the tags and stuff or do I need to put the tags in the text. [/quote] The sun doesn't hurt me, I hurt the sun. How? I haven't figured out how yet but I sounded pretty epic then, am I right? [/quote][/quote] RE: *PLEASE READ* - Submissions Forums for beginners - Ultimecia - 07-10-2010 Nah, just submit it and you're good. Write down your stuff, click "Post Thread" and wait for it And don't worry about asking. After all the best way to get your answers is asking, right? Just ask away ;p RE: *PLEASE READ* - Submissions Forums for beginners - Hstar - 07-10-2010 (07-10-2010, 02:27 PM)Ultimecia Wrote: Nah, just submit it and you're good. Do you want me to put the link underneath? RE: *PLEASE READ* - Submissions Forums for beginners - Ultimecia - 07-10-2010 It won't because I can't figure out an url to get the stuff from. Have you followed this guide? You can also attach a file directly to the post using the "Attachments" during the full-posting/reply RE: *PLEASE READ* - Submissions Forums for beginners - Hstar - 07-10-2010 (07-10-2010, 02:49 PM)Ultimecia Wrote: It won't because I can't figure out an url to get the stuff from.
