Tips for producing own sprite style? - Zerrodo - 02-09-2010

Lately I've been trying to come up with my own style of spriting, but I just can't seem to do it. Any tips?

think of what you like. The size, the colors. Most of my styles developed either from a cool drawing I made or saw, or because I liked the colors on something i made

Don't think about it, just draw/sprite/whatever. There are going to be things you like that will influence you're style but to try and break it down is just going to make it seem really forced. When you have the basics down, then you should think about how you would want to fix this or add on to that or maybe try this or whatever.

"having a style" is an overrated and retarded concept.

go for being accurate about design and anatomy first, then make a style from there. figure out what you like and don't like and apply that to your own designs. for example, I like cartoony and exaggerated facial features and big heads. just be sure everything looks right, and never use "style" as an excuse for poor form.

It just develops over the years based on what you have worked on. I was all into the Megaman 8 crap back in the day, so my spriting draws a lot from that style. Just do custom work, and there's your style.

Rather than try and create your own style, you should try and learn multiple styles. It will help you greatly improve as a pixel artist.

To elaborate on this, if one always sticks to one style how wwill they ever improve?
Only reason I can see to want a style is for the purpose of a specific project.

You produce your own style from your own style of drawing, what your eye sees. there's no way of just coming up with it. You've got to have a good idea of what you want to do with the style then incorporate that into your own drawing talents.

Yes. As everyone said, style isn't a thing you create instantly. It is a group of techniques gathered from different sources that grows as the time passes. I personally think that drawing is a way of coming up with your style. You'll find easier ways to draw a body, animals etc. if you practice.

But, don't stop testing even if you found your style: you'll eventually come up with cool stuff.

yeah
practice with other styles first, then you'll get a good idea with what you want in a self-made style
and this way, you'll have an understanding on what works in terms of elements, such as backgrounds/background items, weapons, characters, enemies, etc.

and when you're making a sprite in a thought-up style, just do whatever feels comfortable for you
when you have a general idea what you're doing, then you can move on to knocking out any problems and improving it a bit more
but always go back to practicing other styles as well, so if you end up getting stuck with something, and you've practiced with another style in that area, you'll know exactly what to do~

rather than being worried about drawing stuff in a particular way, you should be worried about improving your technique and knowledge. just as arthur pointed, most of the time people gets obsesed with doing things in such a way no one else has done it before that people can recognize them anywhere that they just drastically limit themselves.
