Please comment. - Marth - 07-31-2010 First time posting any work done in the studio. These were done outside of class time, in my space there. Not really my best nor worst. I really haven't drawn from imagination though in months so I'm even more rusty there. Really hoping to get some nice critique on these before showing em to my mentor, that way I can make last minute adjustments and such so he'll be a little more pleased with them.(if pleased at all). First one is an illustration of a woman in a suit. From imagination so drapery/wrinkles and such is awful. No ref for the head, so I tried to add a bit of style to it. Next we have a figure that was an experiment in using a dominant aerobesc correctly. Ref'd some of Ruben's work for a suitable areobesc. Figure is mine from imagination though(was influenced by Rubens). I tried desigining her an angel. Along with a gesture of a soldier. Both are quick studies not really indepth work. Last we have some quick goblins I did. I'm unhappy with these two guys overall. They don't have any feirce look to them, and really are just too human. After talking with another student who does fantasy illustration far more and for far longer than I, I figured out that I should ref' birds of preys' eyes for goblin eyes. I'll update with those soon.(digital over was done at home with my tablet since I haven't used it in years and I really wanna get back into digital art. Yeah I traced it, because I'm so outta practice I can't draw with strictly a tablet anymore.) RE: Please comment. - triptych - 08-01-2010 there's this thing called a curved line i think you'd really benefit from learning what it is even the few points in here that do curve seem to be made out of literally a million straight lines its weird RE: Please comment. - Marth - 08-02-2010 I use the straight lines to formalize the information, in an easy to use way. That way, when I go to render, paint, or anything of that nature of said sketch I than simply need to round the edges and such and everything should be in its proper place. It also makes sketching go much faster and allows me to work more accurately. So other than "straight lines are strange" comments(which is what I normally get when posting some of my work on any board) are there any other comments? I need to present these tonight so it's not like they won't get critiiqued. But its always nice to hear from you guys, that way I have another source of critiique coming in. RE: Please comment. - Gors - 08-02-2010 try sketching with curved lines (yes I know you said to give a C+C other than that). It'll give an even more accurate representation of what you want to do and you don't need to spend time rounding the corners. It's not a problem if you're making estilized faces (like that goblin-thing you did) but most of the lines should curve a little more. The colored progress near the sketch is too blocky, so I can say that your technique isn't working. RE: Please comment. - Chris2Balls [:B] - 08-02-2010 that woman's pose looks so wrong: her face is profile whereas her body is facing us. there's no torsion, tension that you find when one twists their necks in such a fashion. i think the problem is the shoulder on the right, it looks too far back and just plain odd. the rubens stuff looks all over the place, and slightly disproportionate, and that guy from the side, he's just leaning too far back, it's an awkward pose. the goblins... i seriously think you should study ears more carefully, because they're pretty badly messed up here. oh... and for the eyes, think about around the eyes rather than the eye itself. basically i want to edit all your stuff, i'll brb for more critique and posting them up, sorry if i sound blunt here RE: Please comment. - Marth - 08-02-2010 Chris, you're not being harsh enough with your crits here. Personally, I'm happy you posted because you posted the most helpful stuff. Can't wait to see the edits, and will take everything you said into close and careful consideration. I just wish I could thank your post more than once. But next time, be a hell of alot harsher on me, trust me it helps me improve much more. RE: Please comment. - Chris2Balls [:B] - 08-02-2010 just like you i'm an undergrad so i'm not the best but i think i pinned some things. right im leaving the rubens thing for last as it's full body, will post soon added the rubens thing: please understand that i have never taken model classes/whatever it's called when models pose and you draw them, so you can iron the mistakes out (as you've taken some i believe). i hope these help you (lucky you!) |
