[GAME][PLAYABLE] - Hot-Head - DudeSean - 08-04-2010 This is a game I've been working on. This is just the first demo I have for it so far. Here are some screenshots: I'm making it in Game Maker. Most of the graphics are made by me with the exception of the cloud background and the explosion sprite. Click here to download or here to visit the website. Controls: Arrow Keys - Move Left/Right, Aim Up/Down 'Z' Key - Jump 'X' Key - Shoot Left 'Shift' Key - Lock Direction 'Enter' Key - Pause 'Esc' Key - Quit F4 - Toggle Fullscreen F9 - Take snapshot. RE: Hot-Head - Vipershark - 08-04-2010 *structurally unsound RE: Hot-Head - triptych - 08-04-2010 shitty game shitty thread shitty sprites peace RE: Hot-Head - CeeY - 08-04-2010 Extremely simplistic. Post when you have more experience with GM. RE: Hot-Head - Sengir - 08-04-2010 Pretty much what CeeY said. When you're working with something so simple as GM, you have really no excuse to make a game so weak. It really shows that you're either not trying/caring or you just aren't familiar with the GM system. Try making a few simple game just to get the hang of it before you try to show off. Also, tSR isn't really a place to get crit on a game as much as it is for sprites. Try PxC or TIGS, they won't judge a game by it's graphics as much. Trust me, even if I did shade it any other way it still wouldn't look any better. They're just simple graphics, man. I didn't design my test level so that it could look like a structurally sound building. How is GM simple? I mean, compared to making something in 'C' it is, but you can still do rather complex things with it. And sorry that you find my game demo to be "weak," it is just a demo. Of course I still have more to learn, I don't know when I won't have anything more to learn. I've posted my demo on other sites, not just this one, in an attempt to get the criticism from different groups of people. Clearly this is the wrong site to try to get critique on a game, though. I'm not sure what you guys expect. A Nintendo-quality game? RE: Hot-Head - TomGuycott - 08-17-2010 (08-17-2010, 05:50 PM)DudeSean Wrote: I'm no graphics artist. I've always sucked at making graphics. Sure, the people here have a variety of interests and lots of them are into games development on the programming level, but you can't expect some criticisms on graphics. Now you COULD get good feedback on the game even if the graphics were simplistic, but the engine would actually have to impress. Saying the graphics aren't good because they are placeholders isn't a very solid argument either, because if that was the case, you shouldn't have even taken time to shade it, especially since it is SOOO pillowshaded, as others have said. If you want good feedback AND can't make graphics, make a solid game engine, impress a few people, and who knows, maybe someone would be willing to make some sprites. (Apologies in advance that I can't actually crit the game in detail, I'm not on a computer that I can download it on right now, but based on comments I must not be missing much) RE: Hot-Head - DudeSean - 08-17-2010 (08-17-2010, 06:08 PM)TomGuycott Wrote: This site is first and foremost a site ABOUT graphics. Well, I assumed I would get criticism on graphics, too. I mean, I'll take what you guys said about pillowshading into account if I make any graphics in the future. I'm not saying the graphics are placeholder, either. I shaded the graphics because I wanted more experience in graphics as well as game development. If I were to make a game that impressed people then I would be willing to have people make some graphics for me if they were interested. This demo is hopefully a step towards being able to make an impressive game. I showed this off with the hopes of getting constructive criticism for what I did right and what I did wrong. I've gotten mixed opinions of my demo (not from here). Some people like it, some people don't. Everyone here seems to dislike it, I guess. Oh, well, though. I still had fun making it and I got myself some more experience. |
