Using Gimp To Make An Avatar - Dakurai - 10-18-2010
Ok I'm trying to make an avatar for Xat for some of you that know about Xat you know what I'm talking about
.. Anyway I'm trying to make an animated Pokemon avatar, I'm using the Pokemon Black and White animations for this. So I'm at a point where I have all my frames for the animation but the background is white and I want to remove it and make it transparent but the problem is when I use the color picker on gimp it also picks up the white that is on the Pokemon and if remove it I will ruin the animation. So I'm wondering how do I add a background color to the animated sprite so it can be easily removed when I get my frames. The steps I suppose to do are..
Open the animated gif in gimp
Crop the area I want
Then Save It As An Animation
Then Use The Xat Frame Extractor
Then I'm suppose to make the background of the avatar tansparent but the background is white and when I remove it, it effects the picture as well..
So basically I want to know how do I add a background color to an animated gif in gimp?
(Sorry if this sounds a bit confusing!)
Any Help Would Be Appreciated!

Use the Magic Wand/Fuzzy Select tool and make sure the Threshold is set to 0, so it only picks up the one background color. Everything else can be unchecked too.

I have tried that this will take me a long time because there is like over 100 frames.. I wondering how to add a background image to the animation before I crop it.. Maybe if you got gimp try to add a background color to this animation and if you can do it try to explain it to me please

Mega easy...
Here, first get the frames of Darkrai...
Them... Ctrl+X on the frame (ONLY ONE FRAME PER IMAGE)
Now create new layer and paste, click at the selection box on the toolbar <<< and click anywhere what are not on the image...
Now, click on wand and delete the background
If you want help... I can make for you, just put the frames...

What I need to do is remove this white background without messing up the white in the darkai's eyes. (Frames) <--- the picture needs to be like this to work on Xat!
What would make this easier if someone showed me how to change the background color in the animation before cropping.

i'm assuming you are using the color selector, judging by the fact it got the eye color
use the fuzzy wand tool gdi

Is there a way for the wand to select all the background because it will take forever just to click one place at a time.

No, because there is no way for the program to tell that the white parts under the arms should be removed but not the white parts in the eyes.

the transparency in a gif image is nothing but a color that mimics the baground beneath it. in order to remove said transparency, all you have to do is turn that transparent color into a regular color.
some softwares like animation shop 3 allow you to edit all the instances of said color in an animation at once.

I don't know if this has already been said, but you color the background in all the animation frames a different color than the sprite, then use the transparent and so forth.
