negrolizard - Ashura - 11-10-2010

Got bored and colored this out of boredom! took about 3-ish hours.

any tips on improving it? I haven't colored anything in over a month so I'm a bit out of it. his left arm is a bit long but I guess I wanted to overexaggerate it?? dunno if I should shrink it or not

btw zuruzukin rocks my socks

First: Most of this has reaaaally similar values. Look what happened when I desaturated this:
I'd suggest lightening up the scarf...thing so it's closer in value to the pants, and maybe darkening his crest
I'd also lighten up the underbelly a smidgeon - as it is, it's waaaay darker than anything else, so it's kind of turned into an unwanted focal point.
and most heinous of all: the shadow on the crest is actually lighter than the base colour! Don't do that. That's silly.
edit Just realised that's meant to be a secondary light source. Cool! But where's the shading from the primary lightsource, then? Even if his crest is DEAD STRAIGHT against the primary lightsource, there should be some shadow as the crest arcs away from the light.
Also: if that's a secondary light source, you seem to have forgotten about it on his head and stomach. :C

If you're working in photoshop, then keep a Hue/Saturation adjustment layer over your painting, where the saturation's set to the lowest (-255, I think? ). Leave it invisible most of the time, but turn it on periodically to check your values.

Second: I've sketched the axial lines over his trunk and hips.

You should be able to see what's wrong with this. His underbelly should follow this line, instead:

(Just a note; if you redraw the underbelly- DON'T MAKE THE LINES PARALLEL WHATEVER YOU DO. Parallel lines are a thing of the devil, because they flatten your image. You probably already know this, since it looks like you've avoided using any parallels in the drawing so far, but I just have to reinforce this)

RE: niggalizard - Ashura - 11-11-2010

Thanks a lot! I will edit it and post the updated version asap.

better?

RE: negrolizard - Gors - 11-11-2010

the belly line still... doesn't look it follows its body

it's clearly better than before, but I think it needs a little bit tweaking

RE: negrolizard - Ashura - 11-11-2010

not gonna add a background or any witty text. The body language is more than enough IMO

RE: negrolizard - Cobalt Blue - 11-14-2010

i'm not sure if you're still working on this, but as a first impresion i read that red spike as his feet, and it took me a while to realise ot was a spike on his tail.

RE: negrolizard - Chutzpar - 11-14-2010

Yeah, you've got kind of a tangent going on with his tail and his leg
dunno how to fix, maybe you could arch his tail up so part of his tail's visible behind the leg?

RE: negrolizard - Ashura - 11-15-2010

oh? haha I tried desaturating the tail so it wouldn't look merged with the leg, but I guess that didn't work

I'll fix that Surprise

how is this??

RE: negrolizard - Gors - 11-15-2010

maybe making the legs a lil' bit stronger in color will make it stand out more.

RE: negrolizard - Kitsu - 11-15-2010

Isn't the tail like a continuation of the spine? So that'd mean it probably shouldn't be doing a whole 90° bend there, right?

That's my only issue with it; that the tail looks like he pasted a stick on his bottom. Everything else looks pretty good to me.

RE: negrolizard - Ashura - 11-15-2010

I honestly don't know if it's a real tail or some extra baggage on its butt that looks like a tail

But yeah, thanks a lot for the help guys ^^ I won't update this anymore since I have to work on other things atm.
