Charmander sprite - brandman1996 - 11-16-2010

OP:

Well, my first custom pokemon for submission. I'm not going to now, I need more poses for different animations but I need to make sure the idle sprite is okay. So C&C. Particularly the area of the gray pixels somewhat outlining the sprite M&L style.

These are the animations I'm planning:

•Basic Animation (standby)
•Attack A.
•Low HP A. (the "low on hp" sound just isn't gonna cut it anymore)
•Staus Effect A.

First off, basic animation. So, um, what should it be? I'm thinking along the lines of this, First, he/she/it (lets just call him/her/it an it) will wag it's tail back and forth two or four times, then, he will move his head back and then forward slightly (enough to notice it but not to extravagant). That good? I'm ready to animate this thing!

RE: Charmander sprite - Gors - 11-16-2010

the outline is kind of jaggy and those gray AA only makes it worse. The flame on his tail could use some work too.

RE: Charmander sprite - Delicious - 11-16-2010

This is quite good. I don't see any jagged pixels, however the grey AA around the black outline is quite dark which makes it look like it is. Either lighten the grey so it doesn't blend so much with the black, or take it out since the background is transparent and against any other background it could look awkward. Try AAing the inner-side of the sprite instead. Keep it up!

RE: Charmander sprite - Nindo - 11-16-2010

Delicious and Gors hit the nail with the unnecessary grey AA on the outline.
I do think that the top-right part of the head and the whole tail are a bit jaggy, as well as all of the shading is fairly jaggy.
The neck shading especially needs to be re-done, as it doesn't convey the shadow of the head in line with the lightsource.

I was thinking the same for the gray AA, but what could I do to improve on the flame tip of the tail? It was a tricky part but I think it's okay. It appears dark due to the dark quality of the AA.

Thanks! I'm thinking about lightening up the gray or canceling the AA all together, though abolishing the AA on the outside would seem to me to provoke the outlining of the games, which I don't want. AA-ing the inside? You mean around the outline or between the shades?

The head and the tail... jaggy? I don't know... but the shading, well I guess I could see where your coming from that. Any particular part besides the neck shading? And I was worried about the necks shading as well. I can fix that real quick.

Okay next time I will bring different versions of the sprite, and you guys tell me which one is better and give C&C to them as well. Hold on.

EDIT:

[Image: charmander_custom_01.gif] [Image: charmander_custom_03.gif] [Image: charmander_custom_02.gif] [Image: charmander_custom_04.gif]

Alright well I'm done. The first image is only changed by the fact that I altered the neck shading and added a little bit to his right hand.

Second, having the same changes from the previous, except I used a lighter shade of gray to AA the outline.

Third, having the same changes of the previous two, except no AA on the outline at all.

Fourth, having the changes made by the third, but outlined classic pokemon style.

The first obviously won't cut it, just to show the bare minimum of neck and hand shading changes. I really want to use the second, unless it's too dark still, and the third I guess I could live with, but is missing the AA which has been the biggest issue of the sprite, and just throwing it out instead of solving the problem seems wrong. And the fourth I don't wan't to use whatsoever because, well, it makes the sprite look too much like a pokemon sprite then the effect I want desired. And it looks too much like the others in the custom section which I also do not want.

So... what do you guys think?

for someone who has already shown a tendence for tracing, i'd kindly love to see you do another pokemon in the exact same style.

Last one is much improved in my opinion. Definitely try with another pokemon and keep practicing. =)

Sure. I want to finish these first though with animations for attacks and such. Charmeleon would be the next one.

Um, as much as I am psyched that someone on here wants to request something from me I have to kindly decline. Not only am I not done with the sprite but it is against the rules to request for something if your under 20 post count.

I don't know...

Ugh, I was hoping no one was going to say the last one....

Anyways, guys. Are they good? Like I've said I would really like to use [Image: charmander_custom_03.gif] this one. Should I? After hearing some more feedback I would like to continue into more animations, such as a basic animation, and attacks.

RE: Charmander sprite - Delicious - 11-17-2010

Personally, I dislike the one you want to use most. The AA you used is not working, you didn't bother to AA the inner outline which is probably far more important in making it look good overall, but I think this sprite in general is far to smal to do that with. It just looks messy in comparision to the last and second to last one. =/

RE: Charmander sprite - Gors - 11-17-2010

Same as Delicious. The one you want to use is p. ugly compared to the last one. The last one is crisper and overall better than every attempt in that sheet.

RE: Charmander sprite - brandman1996 - 11-17-2010

The last one? Well, I never looked at the others that way... well, I guess it's okay. Well then this one,

is it. Well thank you guys for the feedback you have given me. Now that I have got down the idle sprite I would like to move on to the animations, which include:

•Basic Animation (standby)
•Attack A.
•Low HP A. (the "low on hp" sound just isn't gonna cut it anymore)
