Green Hill Zone... again. - Flare - 04-14-2011

So looked at a sprite sheet made years and years ago and thought... "Hmm, wonder what it would look like if I actually put some effort into it"... so here it is remade now.

Not sure how much I will re do but would probably cover what I did in my original sheet as a way to replace it with a much better one. Stuff still a W.I.P.

Looks much nicer. However, I personally think the water looks too... thick? Maybe it just has something to do with all the white and bubbles and whatnot. I dunno.

Wow, huge improvement! Though I must say, I think the reason the water appears odd is the way it likens oil. I think you should tone the amount of foam down.

You are both right - thanks for the comments. Do you think that if it was x2 the space between the ripples would help this out?

RE: Green Hill Zone... again. - tgb621 - 04-14-2011

yeah. maybe even 3x the space. Also, I think that the waterfall needs to either be transparent like the rest of the water or (I like this approach better) have some more indication of motion.

I don't really dig the grassy part either. It's too reflective, makes it look like it's made out of glass, and I think it needs more contrast too - the ground and the water have a lot of contrast to them and they also have really vivid colors, but I don't feel that the grass has the same thing going on with it. Also, it seems too flat too. Maybe try making the grass more like the original GHZ? Make it have more volume and more of a grassy texture to it.

The water and the ground tiles look great though, I dig it a lot!

I believe the 2006 (?) version is cute and cartoony using bright vivid colors, while the new version certainly has a more modern and detailed feel to it, using more detailed textures.

Is that a shadow the grass is casting to the blocks under it? The grass seems to be a part of the block it occupies, following the same curve as the lines of the block edges. Some depth in the grass is visible in the 2006 (?) version, where the grass appears to grow beyond the corners of the block.

The water does look rather thick, and the ripples appear quite noticeable. I like the design of the water, but I think it should a be a little more transparent and the ripples blending into the water... and finally, I think the wall texture looks really nice!

Thanks for all comments so far, taking them into account so redrawing grass to a more natural look. Working on making the water less thick and animate it of course... however here is the most dullest update on it -

So I have had to play about with the size so i could repeat the wall pattern, which is smaller now to match closer to the original zone.
On top of that I am working on slopes which are not perfect pixels I know (i.e its not 45 degrees its like 43.4 or what ever) this will not be a problem as the grass will hopefully cover this up.

Wait I'm confused, are you trying to replicate the style from Sonic 3D, I think it was, or w/e? Or is it just plain custom?

RE: Green Hill Zone... again. - Flare - 04-16-2011

Custom, I am using the Sonic Advance colour palette so I would guess the use of Battle or Advance style sprites wouldn't look too out of place.
