In-Browser Icon Maker - Jermungandr - 08-08-2012

This is something I made about a year ago. Some of you who actually pay attention to my nonsense might have seen me link this in passing. I did some updates to it recently and thought I should probably maybe make it public.

http://www.jermungandr.net/experiments/tsr-icon-maker/

It's a TSR Icon-Maker, which I'm sure you've seen plenty of before, but the gimmick with this one is that it operates completely on the web page, meaning you don't need to download a damn thing. (Well, obviously you have to download the icon once you make it, but you know what I mean).

I tried to make it as simple and intuitive as possible. If you have any questions about anything, the Troubleshooting Guide should hopefully answer them for you. But all you really need to know is:

1) Choose a sprite and crop it from the rest of your sheet, save the file.
* For best results reduce the color count to 256 or less.
2) Upload the cropped image, input some text, and hit submit.
3) Download the resulting icon.

That's all there really is to it, but there are other features there for those of you that really want to get fancy.

To my knowledge this works great on all browsers, but let me know if you encounter any errors.

(To the mods: I wasn't sure where the most appropriate place to post this would be. Please move the topic as you see fit.)

((Please don't hurt me))

Should I sticky this in the Submissions forum, guys? Someone might find it useful.

EDIT: Nevermind, done.

I tried using this instead of Barubary's Icon Maker to see if it worked if I loaded a image with a transparent background into it (with Barubary's it just gives a white background that I can't get rid of). It worked to a certain extent if I chose the Invisible Color as Auto Pick, but the edges looked bad (possibly because the sprite is anti-aliased).
It's not a big deal, I've done it before by just using the template images to make an icon in GIMP, but if possible it'd be cool if you could allow this.

In any case this is a nice tool, good job. Can't really see a reason to use it instead of Barubary's (sprite ripping across multiple PCs?) but it's not doing any harm.

Icon Maker V3b isn't much different from V1, you can just pick between sprite icons, model icons and previews, and texture icons (click "Load Image" or Ctrl + L to import images. With the newest revision, you can now load or drag and drop your saved model renders in the Icon Maker and they'll keep their transparency!).

From my model ripping guide. I really need to post this explanation in the IM thread...

If it already has a transparent background, then theoretically the anti-aliasing should look fine if you choose "None" as the invisible color. ("None" basically means "Don't change anything"). Could you perhaps post your original image so I can experiment with it?

RE: In-Browser Icon Maker - puggsoy - 08-09-2012

No, I already tried "None" and it gave me a black background. Theoretically it should work but apparently it doesn't.

Here's the image I was using, if you want to experiment or whatever.

Oh wow, thanks! I didn't even know version 3b was out, I was still using 3. This is way better, transparency works perfectly, and much easier than making it in GIMP.

RE: In-Browser Icon Maker - Jermungandr - 08-09-2012

Ah I found the problem. Your file has a unique color count of 3863 colors. PHP Image Generation tries to create images with a 256 count palette (this is not something I have any control over) so it was causing problems trying to decide which colors to keep.

I saved your image as a 256 color image and used the icon creator on it, and ended up with this:

[Image: IconSample01.png] vs. [Image: IconSample02.png]

Arguably it could have looked even better if I had used something other than Irfanview to resave the image, but I think you get the point.

RE: In-Browser Icon Maker - puggsoy - 08-09-2012

Oh OK cool, not really too bad then. I mean this is from a fairly new PC game and it's like super-high quality (this is actually a scaled down version) but most sprites people use will probably use 256 colours (or less).

Also it's funny how you thought it was a model, it's a sprite, although it is based off 3D models. Or did you just use the model icon colours for no real reason?

RE: In-Browser Icon Maker - Jermungandr - 08-09-2012

No I assumed it was a model.

A favicon (short for 'favorites icon'), are litle icons associated with a particular website or webpage, shown next to the site's name in the URL bar of most browsers. The most common sizes for favicons are: 16x16, 32x32, 48x48, 64x64, 128x128. Browse to the file's location on your computer to select the image and press "Upload Image" button to generate a favicon for your site..........

Oh spambots, I adore you so.

RE: In-Browser Icon Maker - Jermungandr - 12-04-2013

Y'know, you could probably just include this in the first post of the template/icon maker thread. It feels kind of weird and exposed giving this one a sticky all to itself when the other topic already exists. Just throwing that out there.
