Dreamcast, the Indie Game Maker's Dream - trans the psycopath - 08-13-2014 i think the sega dreamcast is the perfect thing for indie game developers to use in making big games. you see the dream cast has lousy security and even after it was fixed it was still easy to by pass and even now the system is considered the 8th best in the world. plus unlike a computer it wont slow down while you play bigger games and has eh decent power actually. so i think it would be fun if some one made a team(or several) to make some indie games for it since sega has stopped support of it its all good and legal.i personally would love to make an indie game for it if i had a team what do you guys think would you make an indie game for it if you had a team for it. and what type of games would you make. id like to hear any other thoughts you might have about this or your thoughts on the sega dreamcast in general. ps some company's do still make games for it despite sega's lack of support for it. RE: dreamcast the indie game makers dream - BullockDS - 08-14-2014 The Dreamcast is a pretty fantastic piece of hardware (for its time, anyway), and it definitely has great potential for indie development. I just wish that schmups weren't the dominant genre for DC indie dev. But...they have. There's Last Hope. There's Wind and Water Puzzle Battles. There's Pier Solar HD, releasing later this year. ...there's a lot actually. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_commercially_released_independently_developed_Dreamcast_games The thing is, it's...not really. It's kind of a legal grey area - and the indie games you do see pop up appear in specialist shops, provided in only the dozens by the publishers themselves. It's also kinda difficult to make a game from the ground up without a full devkit (which uh, good luck getting one in 2014) of some sort and little understanding of the DC's internals, especially one that plays like a retail or indie quality experience (like, you're not gonna get a DC port of Skullgirls anytime soon) of course if there's a strapping young indie dev here who can confirm that yes indeed, i can port my unity code into something readily usable on the dreamcast, let me know and i'll get coding asap RE: dreamcast the indie game makers dream - trans the psycopath - 08-14-2014 (08-14-2014, 10:03 AM)Kosheh Wrote: But...they have.wow i knew there were a few indie games for dream cast but i dident know it was that populair a thing to do. sure id love to do that but i dont know how to use code myself i always used the stencyl software although it does allow the use of custom code if you really want RE: dreamcast the indie game makers dream - Koh - 08-14-2014 (08-13-2014, 09:39 PM)trans the psycopath Wrote: i think the sega dreamcast is the perfect thing for indie game developers to use in making big games. you see the dream cast has lousy security and even after it was fixed it was still easy to by pass and even now the system is considered the 8th best in the world. plus unlike a computer it wont slow down while you play bigger games and has eh decent power actually.I need some commas and capitalization in my life. I could hardly understand you. Anyway, it would be interesting to see a market for this, but aren't there only so many of these consoles left? It's not necessarily the widest of markets to cater to. RE: dreamcast the indie game makers dream - Vipershark - 08-14-2014 If you're aiming for Dreamcast as the target platform and doing a PC version as well I could see it being pretty viable but specifically Dreamcast -only- seems kind of dumb. RE: Dreamcast, the Indie Game Maker's Dream - [robo9] - 08-14-2014 If there is a surgance of indie games for older consoles, someone let me know when making N64 games become a thing RE: Dreamcast, the Indie Game Maker's Dream - trans the psycopath - 08-17-2014 (08-14-2014, 11:37 PM)Sportoise Wrote: If there is a surgance of indie games for older consoles, someone let me know when making N64 games become a thing thats actually harder to do then the dream cast because its hard to find new rom cartridges of any type trust me ive tried |
