How to handle voices that overlap musical jingles/other sound effects? - Garamonde - 09-25-2015 (I think this is the right place to post this...) Howdy all. As some of you may be aware, I've been trying to rip assets from Steven Universe: Attack the Light. Aside from the graphics, I plan to submit the sound effects as well. Now, this seems as though it'd be mostly straightforward, especially considering the sounds are all conveniently labeled. Only trouble is, it seems that some of the voices and sounds are handled a bit strangely. What I'm talking about is that, for example, as the title says, there are a few voice clips that are laid over top of/play within the same file as musical jingles and/or other sound effects. No separation or anything. Here's a few examples of what I'm talking about: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/95200614/sfx_gameover1%20%23240.wav https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/95200614/sfx_stage_secretroom1%20%23153.wav https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/95200614/sfx_alexandrite%20%2343.wav First question, should I include ones that have musical jingles tied to them (gameover1.wav, stage secretroom1.wav)? Second question, how do you think I should sort these? Especially considering that alexandrite.wav has more sound effecty content than actual voice. Any thoughts are appreciated! EDIT: Also while I'm at it, may as well ask to confirm: I take it I don't include stuff like this or this, right? RE: How to handle voices that overlap musical jingles/other sound effects? - Gors - 09-25-2015 I think as a rule of thumb, you should include all voice clips and sound effects from a game. Sound effects comprise of: 1 - character voice (grunts, quotes); 2 - musical jingles; 3 - sound bits such as explosions, moving cursors, GUI elements. If your character's voice is merged with a jingle, include it anyway. Include everything that an original soundtrack disc would not include. RE: How to handle voices that overlap musical jingles/other sound effects? - Garamonde - 09-25-2015 Yea, I've actually decided to have each character-dedicated archive include their voices and all sound effects relevant to them because of the occasional merging of the two. I keep being on the fence about jingles because I see them as songs, only really short (and also that sometimes they are included in soundtracks if I'm not mistaken), but I guess there's a reason they're included in the "sfx" group for this game. Also, I'd like to see what RTB or whoever manages sounds thinks about the rest. RE: How to handle voices that overlap musical jingles/other sound effects? - puggsoy - 09-25-2015 Personally if the jingle is really short (< about 10 seconds) I'd consider it a sound effect. If possible it's probably best to actually check the soundtrack, I found the one for Attack the Light here. All of them are quite long and have no voices, so I'm pretty sure you're safe. Like Gors said, if it's not in the soundtrack it should be included, since that's the only reason you wouldn't. Another indicator can be file formats, as you probably know music is often in .mp3 or .ogg while sound effects are in .wav. Of course, not all games follow this convention, and some store everything in the same format. In this case I don't think this is a good way to choose though, since I wouldn't consider "sfx_battle_lose #209.mp3" to be music. I had done the same thing for the Costume Mario sounds that I submitted from Super Mario Maker, for the exact same reason (namely Bowser Jr.'s goal theme having his voice overlay it). So yeah, I'll definitely allow it, but before anyone else says anything this is only for ditties that have voice clips or additional sounds overlaying it. We still don't accept full music submissions.
