HTC Rift - Oculus Vive - VR - Guy - 04-23-2016

Title speaks for itself fellas, has anyone preordered/gotten their preorders for the Vive/Rift?

Recieved my Vive a few weeks ago, i'm shocked that there aren't really any mentions of VR in here!

Been having a blast with it in my free time, though there's still a lack of good, quality content atm.

I really want one. I do wish it wasn't so dang expensive, especially considering, as you said, it's currently lacking any exceptional content. Now truthfully, it's still early so that's plenty understandable, but it does make it all the more saddening. Either way, I'll be getting it one way or another in the near future, and I'm pumped.

Yeah though I can't wait to try it out. How is the setup process? Is it as much of a nightmare as I've heard?

Haha yea, the charge definitely stung a bit.

The setup process went mostly without a hitch, just a little elbow grease, the first time i booted up steamVR, i was standing beneath my floor with my eyes at ground level.
That quickly fixed itself after restarting, I've had instances afterwards of going through my floor (which is nauseating) from time to time too.

So it doesn't happen often, but it DOES happen, as for games Minecraft, Hover Junkers, and The Lab are some of my best experiences in the Vive, I've walked face first into my wall multiple times, not to mention how many times I've hit my walls with the controllers.

That sounds...painful.  It's hard to get exciting about something when this is the selling point...XD;

I think I'm going to wait for VR to move past the massively expensive ski goggles phase. When it gets to it's 4th generation, maybe - but at the moment it's really meh.

It looks like fun, I'll admit, but I'm much more mesmerized by arcade games. Nothing against the idea of VR though. Like they went from 2D to 3D graphics, they'll make it from 3D graphics to VR.

Very much what Jazz said, 3D to VR is like 2D to 3D. It'll be a new way of playing games, a new style of game, but I highly doubt it overtaking everything else. Modern 2D games are just as interesting, fun, and playable as 3D games, and I'm sure it'll be a similar thing. It will add, not consume.

In terms of acquiring it... as much as I'd love to, it's not cheap. Even more so here in NZ than in the US or UK, I imagine. It'll be a while before it's actually an affordable investment. When that time comes though, I will be very interested in getting it as I can see a lot of things happening with it. I'd love to mess about with making my own things for it too.

I'll wait for the second generation and then get it for one of the new consoles. Technology should be seasoned then, and maybe there are price drops due to more competition.

These are some excellent points, It really is the equivalent of 2d > 3d (including that tingly feeling you may have gotten going from playing SNES/SEGA games to N64/PS1.)

To get it all out there, I'd never tried anything VR before getting my Vive, so when it arrived my immediate thoughts were

- it's a bit uncomfortable due to it's weight/size
- GAH! the resolution, isn't quite as sharp as I was expecting.
- Is it hot in here? (seriously it starts to get hot moving around with this thing on)

However, if you ever get the chance to try out VR, do it!

It feels like being able to step into another place just by putting the headset on. It makes you feel like a little kid again, after playing The Lab, and playing with the little robo dog, I really wanted a pokemon farm game or something, to interact with/feed/pet/play with pokemon, you almost forget you're interacting with virtual objects at times and you start to feel all warm and fuzzy inside.


I'm sure with the advent of the second or third gen of VR we'll really start to see it pick up as cost will likely drop a bit and resolution/quality/content will certainly grow.

The thing I really think VR is missing is touch. I'm sure some kind of responsive glove like things will eventually happen but at the moment the idea of just passing through things sounds like it'll make me feel sick.

I tried it a couple of times. I don't think I plan on getting it anytime soon. Its just not for me.
