Looking for feedback on Oswald (sonic style)? - LakituBro - 04-06-2017

(yes I know the sheet's small, just go with it)
Looking for feedback. If somebody could give me some pointers on what to do, that'd be great.
Thanks in advance.

It still looks far too much like the Cream The Rabbit sprites you edited. I would start over making it from scratch with references instead of taking official sonic art and altering it. If you do insist on still using this sprite, Oswald's ears stand up instead of flopping down. His pants are also a lighter color. The shading is also extremely messy and makes it hard to see his form. Here's a reference pick for some help

it's more or less a recolor of cream the rabbit sprites. as cloud mentioned you should utilize what you observe from the reference a bit more just to make the sprites look more unique.

Yeah. About the shading... All my sprites have horrendous shading. That's the thing about me. I also have made his pants a lighter color. I used an incorrect reference for Oswald. It had "pac-man" eyes and looked more like Mickey with Oswald's ears and pants than Oswald. I also get that his ears stand up. I'd have to completely redo his ears. But thanks for the feedback.

I also think it was worth mentioning that I made this as less of an Oswald sprite and more of a base for a fan character.

If you weren't intending it to actually look like Oswald then you should've been more clear that it was an original character. However, regardless of whether it's Oswald or not, it still just looks like a bad recolor of Cream The Rabbit. You could stand to make it look a little more original...

You said "I'd have to completely redo his ears." This is kind of the point. You want to redo the ears, alter proportions, add new details or patterns, change body types, etc. It's all about being unique and interesting. Make it stand out, look special. Make it catch people's eye not for being a crummy Cream edit, but for being a wholly unique character in the Sonic universe.

I still intended on it being Oswald, but I also planned on it being a base for a fan-character. I should've been more clear in what I was saying. The thing about my fan characters is that I know they're bad recolors. I still intend on making this sheet a proper Oswald sheet.

I do agree that his ears should be upright. This is what I've got so far.

[Image: 41xA7V7iDJL._SY355_.jpg]I also use this plushie as a reference, because I own it. I'm not sure how accurate this is, that's part of the reason for my color choices on his ears.

Stating that you're not trying to spam doesn't make a spam comment not spam. A feedback thread is for actual constructive feedback, not just "it's good" or "it's bad" comments.

I'm going to chime in on this and piggy back on what cloud is saying to OP. Unless you're willing to put in the work to completely overhaul the sprites you are editing, edits will not serve any purpose to make you stand out as an artist at your level.

And you know I'm not saying this to be mean but to be frank, any 8th grader can grab sprites from the resource and edit them. We've literally all done it at some point in our lives.

Do some research on other sprite styles, maybe look at some of the mickey mouse games and take what you've learned from the sonic advance style. Then once you get a good grasp on what styles you like take what you can to learn visually from them and start over with something from scratch. But please, for the sake for your own self OP, don't use another sprite as a base to edit off of unless you absolutely know what you are doing, you might just find that you don't need to do that later on when you start doing everything with out that crutch.
