Best SNES emulator for sprite ripping? - Dark_Ansem - 10-19-2022 Title. Is ZSNES still a thing or the king has been dethroned? I'm on windows btw. I would heavily recommend BSNES+. Not only is the interface for viewing sprites contained in the emulator itself (unless ZSNES where you need to use an external program for that), but it's also better overall in terms of emulator accuracy. RE: Best SNES emulator for sprite ripping? - Dark_Ansem - 10-19-2022 Oh I never knew about that, thank you very much! RE: Best SNES emulator for sprite ripping? - Barack Obama - 10-19-2022 bsnes+? I can only find the regular bsnes v115 https://github.com/bsnes-emu/bsnes/releases/tag/v115 and bsnes hd beta 10.6 https://github.com/DerKoun/bsnes-hd Is there are third one? RE: Best SNES emulator for sprite ripping? - Yawackhary - 10-19-2022 If you want to rip SNES games now, the better options are bsnes-plus (bsnes in general is a lot more accurate as ZSNES hasn't been updated for over 15 years*) and BizHawk that uses bsnes cores. Both of these have tile viewers, background viewers, bsnes-plus has a palette viewer, remove background/sprite layers and can also accept cheats. *- Improvements include rendering the shadow in Air Strike Patrol that's missing in older emulators (and performance options in bsnes/Ares), able to complete Speedy Gonzales that crashes in ZSNES on a level where you press a button, supports the Super Game Boy and the homebrew MSU-1 chip (e.g. able to play the SNES port of Road Avenger), emulation of some obscure Japanese shogi games that used an ARM processor as a helper chip, bsnes-plus also includes emulation of the BS-X. Also from what I've read, Secret of Evermore and Super Mario RPG are more stable and behave like real hardware (ZSNES requires workarounds otherwise it can randomly crash going to the map for the former, the latter crashes while equipping items or getting the 5th star in the later versions). You can use still use ZSNES with a bit of caution. Barack Obama who uses it also uses the VSNES savestate tool, mainly because VSNES can only accept savestates from ZSNES. (Oh great... got ninjaed so badly that the only thing was the OP... oh well...) RE: Best SNES emulator for sprite ripping? - Pik - 10-19-2022 An alternative to bsnes+ is Mesen-S, which also has a Tilemap/Tile Viewer built in. You'd be well off with either one really, just wanted to throw it in the ring too. Here's an example of it with two different games (Snoopy Concerto and Ogre Battle) RE: Best SNES emulator for sprite ripping? - Dark_Ansem - 10-20-2022 (10-19-2022, 02:59 PM)Yawackhary Wrote: as ZSNES hasn't been updated for over 15 years*Wow, now I feel ancient. RE: Best SNES emulator for sprite ripping? - Dark_Ansem - 10-21-2022 Gotta thank you all for BSNES+, it is in fact amazing for ripping. RE: Best SNES emulator for sprite ripping? - Dark_Ansem - 11-03-2022 I don't suppose you guys would know the best GBA emulator for ripping, yes? RE: Best SNES emulator for sprite ripping? - Barack Obama - 11-03-2022 Most-used GBA emulators No$GBA (also a DS emulator, last update 3.05 from 2021) Visual Boy Advance / VBA (the original is discontinued, but has different variants like VBA-M with the last update 2.1.4 from 2021) mGBA (last update from this month, 0.10.0) For the sake of completion: BatGBA (super old and not recommendable, last update from 2002, also can't say anything about the three below this one) Boycott Advance RascalBoy Advance DreamGBA And also multi-system emulators like higan BizHawk (apparently pretty good) RetroArch There was also an emulator that needs "Poppy Bright" to be enabled to display accurate colours? I think this was the case for the original VBA. Since I'm not a GBA ripper, I can only recommend trying out various emulators and look out for internal background & tile viewers. Maybe start with BizHawk, which was recommended in another thread? RE: Best SNES emulator for sprite ripping? - Dark_Ansem - 11-03-2022 Thank you, MGBA is actually great! RE: Best SNES emulator for sprite ripping? - Barack Obama - 11-09-2022 I just tried bsnes+ and I must say, the way how it handles the updated VRAM is pretty neat, it's basically an emulator with integrated vSNES functions and an auto-updater as you play. What I don't like is that all colours are slightly off, even the vSNES palettes differ from the bsnes+ palettes, with the latter one displaying the colours slightly brighter. I guess this is how it goes with every emulator, just being slightly off colour in comparison to each other. Therefore I decided that I stick with ZSNES 1.51, it's the emulator I know and the one which works best for me. But if I just want to play SNES games and not rip them, every other emulator is better since the ZSNES window max resolution on my GTX 1060 is 1600x1200 pixels, which is not the optimum for a 4k monitor. |
