Edited/Custom Sprites: Good or Bad? - Grey_Wolf_Leader - 09-07-2009

This is probably not a good thing to bring up, but I'm going to ask anyway because I need concrete answers.

Since (as my user title states) I am a novice still at spriting, that means that like most newbies I started out editing sprites that already exist. In fact, I'm still doing this almost exclusively since I am trying to perfect my spriting style.

I have a big project to create custom (i.e. edited) sprites in mind for a video game franchise that has been mostly untouched. However, after viewing a couple topics up here on the disscussion board, I realized that edited sprites seem to be frowned down upon by veteran spriters.

So my question is this: If a spriter decides to edit official sprites made by a video game company, in order to make "new" sprites for characters of a different franchise, is it okay to post them in the customs section if credit for the original company maker and sprite ripper is given like it is supposed to? (Oh, and also if the quality of the edited sprites is good enough? *Important thing to note*)

If they're editted well enough, then it shouldn't be a crime.

Thing is, only place in the customs/edits section if you're planning to submit to the site. Sprite Discussion is talk about what you're working on and how to improve on it and Sprite Projects is for large scale spriting/game making projects.

I don't mind edits if they're good. Cheaply recolored and edited sprites are usually frowned upon though.

The amount of people submitting customs are rather low due to the high standards set by the site.

I suggest you practice a lot and work real hard. Work your way into the world of customs. Because, by god, customs deserve more respect than their getting now. And only more dedicated spriters can change that.

Customs aren't always better.

Thanks for the honest input people!

I just needed to be absolutely sure. I'm certain we all have made the mistake of assuming something, only to come have it bite us in the behind. Goodness knows I've done it more than most...

Oh, by the way, thanks for the helpful forum info Smithy! And good luck on your next rip!
