Fire Emblem consists of many games with different protagonists, like Final Fantasy and stuff. It's a source of many characters. We have NES Marth, GC Ike and 3DS Robin (Lucina doesn't count, because intended to be a costume). Why not add GBA Roy? Sure there's Eliwood, but again, more people know Roy, FE or not.
I know you're giving an example here, but they changed up Ike's appearance in this game to reflect his newer Radiant Dawn appearance.
I kinda wonder if they'll change Roy's appearance to the one from the Awakening DLC. That'd be amazing, but...
I don't know how likely that'd be given Ike, too was redesigned and that's not in SSB4 either :/
but
what if they put in eliwood
what if they put in eliwood

Roy will likely use his Awakening design when you consider Marth and Ike were updated to later designs, not necessarily their most recent but something progressive. Roy's only other design iiiiiiiiss his Awakening one, which is pretty badass. Hope he keeps the Sword of Seals though.

Actually, I don't think anyone would complain about this
Robin would be a really big loss. Robin is a really big step forward for Fire Emblem characters in smash.

Outside of Smash Bros, Roy is a nobody. At least Captain Falcon had something going for him outside of Smash. He had a TV series and a couple of games under his belt.
this is funny, because falcon and ness were nobodies during during smash 64, yet they were added. huh.
and when did a character had to be somebody to be in smash bros? last time i recalled, nobody asked for wii fit trainer in sm4sh.

because ever since you've stepped in a smash bros thread, all you've done is bitch about characters and items and whatnot.
dk isnt getting much rep because not its not popular. metroid isnt getting much rep because its not popular. star fox isnt getting any rep because its just not popular.
when making characters, sakurai has to realize that he must make characters that cater to the general market and the internet, in the USA, Europe, AND Japan. thus, choosing a character that everyone would like is a difficult process. people may preach for pokemon in the US, while people preach for kid icarus in japan.
age differences also have a part in this. 10 year-old kids seem to be the audience for this game, so of course more pokemon/mario characters are going to be added. its more recognizable to kids than king k rool or mr. game & watch.

Well actually...King K. rool is the most popular request in Japan and America as far as I can recall, since he and Ridley are the only Big wigs still missing out.
Also I wouldn't say DK isn't popular through, I'd put it maybe Kirby level of fame.

Tbh I feel like Donkey Mong is more popular than Fire Emblem, but that's just me. It has the whole "being a thing for twice as long" deal. More people know about DK than Marth, ya know?
donkey kong arcade was released in 1981. fire emblem nes was released in 1990. dk's probably more relevant than marth because fire emblem games didnt come here until like, the 7th entry in the entire franchise.

To be honest, I think your opinions of what's popular or how relevant things were at a given period are about as wrong as Koopaul's...
Quote:dk isnt getting much rep because not its not popular. metroid isnt getting much rep because its not popular. star fox isnt getting any rep because its just not popular.
Literally none of this is true. All three of these franchises are mega popular, and not just with gamers. Star Fox isn't getting any representation probably because it hasn't had a proper game since 2006, Metroid doesn't have any notable characters who aren't Samus or Ridley (and Sakurai has been pretty clear about his opinions on that). When the SSB4 roster was decided upon, the only new DK game to drop was DKCR, which featured Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong. Tropical Freeze didn't show up until SSB4 was pretty deep into development.
But none of these franchises have become unpopular.
And...
Quote: falcon and ness were nobodies during during smash 64, yet they were added. huh.
This is laughably untrue. At the time of Super Smash Bros.' original release in 1999, F-Zero had two games under its belt and had established itself as an acclaimed high-speed racing franchise. F-Zero X had just released six months before, and the Smash franchise has always been about two things above all else:
1: Popularizing Nintendo's currently developed franchises and
2: Celebrating the generation of Nintendo that had come before it. In the case of Super Smash Bros., which debuted at the end of the Nintendo 64's lifespan, it ended up featuring a nice mix of SNES and N64 representation.
Which is why Ness was a totally relevant character during the game's development. Earthbound rocked the RPG genre with its SNES release, and had done well enough that a sequel had been in development for five years at that point, and had been playable at Nintendo Space World 1999, the same year Super Smash Bros. dropped. Ness was there to celebrate the SNES classic and to raise franchise awareness for its ill-fated successor.

sure, these franchises have their fair share of fans, but its not as big as say, mario or pokemon. more slots are going to be given to more recognizable characters. when i played melee back when it was still new, i can assure you that i didnt know who fox, samus, or falcon was until i played that game. sure, other people would've known who they were, but thats not really a lot of people in comparison to mario/pokemon.

yeah! because i sure do remember earthbound doing so well in the US and getting a sequel in the US!
oh, wait... :\
also, super mario kart sold waayyyyyy better than f-zero. a serious 9:1 ratio over here. the only thing i can say is that smash bros sure did popularize series that weren't well known...

I finally downloaded Mewtwo last night and had a bunch of fun with him. I'm not really GOOD as him, but I love him anyway.
I'm still only decent with Dedede, Bowser and Ness.

I want to see Vivi in Smash. It isn't gonna happen and there's no reason why it would, but I wanna see it.

Mother 3 came probably a bit too late. By the time Mother 3 was released on the GBA in Japan, Nintendo had started marketing the DS pretty darn hard. Not only that, but Mother 3 had an assload of text, and it just wouldn't be worth it to translate and localize a game for a console that was slowly getting phazed out late into the DS' lifespan. Nintendo's quite aware of the Earthbound fanbase, but localizing a cult game like that while the DS was just starting to pick up steam was a good business move.
God the Mother franchise in the West was just a crazy series of unfortunate circumstances. Mother 1 was even fully translated and everything, and was probably where the name "Earthbound" came from. Mother 2, while it has a lot of alien imagery, really didn't have the plot focus on aliens like the original did. It was just really difficult to release Mother 1, as by the time it was ready-the SNES had been out for years. Mother 2 did come out in 1994, but it was unfortunately overshadowed by much more visually impressive games like Final Fantasy 3. Earthbound 64 was in development for the N64 Disk Drive, and I mean /that/ thing was a complete disaster.
Ness being included as a playable character in Smash was probably Iwata's doing, as he had worked on Mother 2 and had attachment to the franchise. It's probably the single best thing to happen to the franchise.
F-Zero, on the other hand, was a SNES Launch Title. It was pretty much a tech demo for how to make Mode 7 racing games. It's no surprise that Super Mario Kart was more popular, it took the groundwork laid out for F-Zero and expanded on it (plus it's a Mario game you put him on anything he'll sell). F-Zero eventually went on to become it's own beast with F-Zero X, and it only made sense to add Falcon as a playable character.
I don't know what point I'm trying to make here okay.
Basically, I don't think it's fair to say that characters are nobodies. They all represent a point in Nintendo history. Even Roy, dude Sword of Seals was the first Fire Emblem game released on a handheld. Who knew Turn Based Strategy fit so well on a handheld? I think the only reason it DIDN'T get translated is because, well, it was /too hard/. We got Fire Emblem Blazing Sword instead, which was tailor made for our small North American brains.
I also am one of the few people who didn't know much about Zelda until Smash 64's preview in Nintendo Power. I mean, I knew the Green Guy in the Sword but I mostly played cartoony games as a child- Star Fox was probably the only exception but even then they are talking animals. Smash did inspire me to rent Ocarina of Time, though. As well as Earthbound, F-Zero X, and even later on Metroid Prime. I'm sure there are people out there who weren't hooked on the Pokemon Bandwagon and had no idea what a Pikachu was. That doesn't mean that Link and Pikachu are nobodies, it just means that people didn't really play those games.
EDIT: fuck we switched topics in between my massive rambling. Hey I would totally be down for some FF love in Smash too!!!!
