The Revenge of Mit's Sprites

I think the outline makes it look much more readable, but that could just be because it doesn't work well against that background without it.

This is some really neat stuff you cooked up right here, Especially the Mario ones. Judging from a few of the GIFs... Are these being used in any fangames of sorts? Just curious.

EDIT: Oh, I'm an idiot... You are actually. (I need to read through threads fully more. '_')

newest on right (farthest left is from bmup, middle was just as practice). originally it had sel-out:

but i wondered how it'd look without it, and it looks much cleaner. this is also one of the few times where i make a palette first, then make a sprite after.

The outlined version looks a lot better, and wouldn't blend in with the backgrounds like the non-outlined version would.

i still think the outlined version is kinda weird looking. to compensate i changed the background colors on the sheet to contrast better-

and for what it's worth, here it is at 5x

Hmmmmmmm.... nah. Outlines are still more readable. The unoutlined one makes me need to zoom in to see it clearly, and I keep mistaking his hands for fists on it, plus I like how the back of the hair's shading looks against the outline; kinda gives it an ambient light look.

the outlines give it this weird sense of false thickness that make the shapes less defined (notably the hair) so i dunno still. if it's a matter of readability then i can adjust the color contrast and fix things up accordingly (i already gave his hand a darker shade to help make it more distinguishable, i just can't post it right now, i'm on mobile)

EDIT: here it is

revised outline version as well, i still don't really like it that much.

I prefer it without outlines, personally.

yeah, its better without outlines for sure. however, at that cost, it makes things less readable. notably, the arm, feet, and eyes. im only judging this based on the 1x version, so maybe i just have bad eyes. Sick

Maybe you could mess with the pose to fix up readability issues?

i made a few edits:

A and C both have a shade under the eyes to make them appear longer. A's shade is lighter than C's. B is the last face i did.

i also did an edited pose that makes the arm more visible.

i also edited her colors a bit to be brighter, as well as higher contrast.

EDIT: whoops almost forgot

i tested the sprites out on one of wiwa's backgrounds because i wanted to both see how it looked without outlines and how it'd look with transparent black outlines. i kinda like how the transparent black ones came out

I was going to suggest the transparent black outlines as well, actually. I didn't know if it'd look good but from that mock-up it looks like it'd work fantastically.

When you use outlines make sure not to "bloat" the sprite because you are in effect making the spriter thicker by adding more pixels around the outside. That is the issue I see with the outlined version up at post 96 and this is why the outlined one looks weird to me. You want the outlines generally to be part of the sprite rather than a border around them so to speak. This can cause issues with details being lost but sometimes it needs to be done.

Besides all that, I like the outline-less versions seen on post 100 the most so far.

I'm in love with that run animation. The no outline style looks lovely.
