Alcahest - Lizardman (WIP)

Alcahest - Stage 1 Background (WIP)

I really like how the VRAM looks, it's very clean and comes with a 16x16 grid.

Recolour 1.6 by Previous Studios (0,8MB - Freeware)
https://mega.nz/file/8VxlUDRB#oxLrNq7N98...jgLYp6wr4c
Comes with a manual, it's a palette changer tool with some neat features. No installation neccessary.

I used it to erase the background by adding its palette bar and a pink bar of the same size. Through the tool, both swap their colours and voilà, all background colours become pink.

I like your sheets so far! You are very thorough and I am awaiting with baited breath to see what you do next. Smile

Thanks, but I'm not sure what to rip next, anything substantial that I can do or stuff that the SNES section "must" have?

There are many sections that may seem complete, but need thorough cleaning. Final Fantasy 6 has most things ripped, but is missing paletts, tiles, and the organization is too messy. Additionally, I'm sure maps are missing good chunks and animated tiles. Trials of Mana is similar in that regard as well as A Link to the Past. These are just a few examples and I'm sure you can settle on something.

EDIT: Come to think of it, Alcahest has some really cool bosses that could use ripping. I don't know if that would be something you might want to do or not, though.

My SNES shortlist for the most important games that need complete rerips are;

1. Yoshi's Island
2. Super Metroid

Others that could use work:

1. Harvest Moon
2. Robotrek
3. Super Double Dragon

I actually thought of things that don't exist anywhere else and after that 2 month cleanup of Super Mario World, I would like to try single important sheets, not entire sections of a game.

But yeah, Alcahest looks pretty cool. The main character already exists on Sprite Database (by a ripper who also submitted to TSR before), so maybe I try a few bosses.

Edit: Ah, Ton wrote something. I respond to that later.

I once ripped a few bosses from the game over a decade ago, but about hundred or so sheets that I was storing to unload on TSR around that time were lost when my old laptop crashed and I couldn't recover them. Sad

Make me proud, son.

Yoshi's Island
Playable characters already have very good rips, as far as I can see. The foreground stages are very easy to rip through GoldenEye:
https://www.romhacking.net/games/800/
The rest of the sprites could probably be
Method A - decompressed with Ycompress and viewed with an SNES tile editor like YY-CHR. Thing is, I'm not really good with this tool.
Method B - palette swapped from the GBA rips, since these are already very good too. Of course, palettes from both games are needed and I don't have much experience with GBA ripping.
Method C - ripped from scratch. Imo, this is a waste of time.

Super Metroid
Oh yes, this section is awful. But as I said, not another months-long cleanup. The smartest thing to do would be to get rid of the crappy SGK rips, which are incomplete and full of errors. This would include the playable character (Samus Aran) and one of the bosses (Torizo). Samus itself needs 2 rips, since she wears two different suits (Power Suit + Variat Suit (and its recolour Gravity Suit).

Harvest Moon
Jack could need a tile rip, that's for sure. Not sure if I could get it with vSNES (VRAM, WRAM, ROM), but I could decompress the graphics with HME (Harvest Moon Editor) and view them with YY-CHR (have to do reasearch about this method, I never really tried it):
https://www.romhacking.net/games/728/
Not sure what else could be missing except maps.

Robotrek
Probably needs battle sprites & other party members, also NPCs & enemies? I don't know, I never played the game.

Super Double Dragon
Not into fighting games, so this game doesn't interest me much. But I can clearly see that the ripper for the playable character didn't know about vSNES, since Billy Lee misses various body parts when it comes to overlapping other sprites, probably due to grabbing. Otherwise the sheet looks solid and only needs minor updates, I guess.

-Conclusion?-
I have the most interest in the following:
- Alcahest: Various bosses, I already ripped boss 1 (Lizardman) and want to do at least boss 2 (this lava golem thing which looks like a knight)
- Havest Moon: Jack (tile rip)
- Super Metroid: Samus Aran (all suits) & Torizo

-And for the other games?-
- Yoshi's Island doesn't need my skills. Yoshi & Mario have good rips, level ripping is too easy (GoldenEye) and could be done by anyone, enemies/bosses are already ripped (SMA4, GBA) and would only need a palette swap.
- Double Dragon is a beat 'em up and I'm not really interested in that.
- I would give Robotrek a try, but three games are enough for now.

I start with Harvest Moon, let's see if I can get something out of it.

For YI, I was mostly thinking the enemies and bosses.

That's a good list, though!

I once tried to rip the doors from Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, but I failed.

I might try again once I update Yoshi's sheet for Super Mario World. Tongue

Speaking of Yoshi, I'm also going to update the SMW2YI Yoshi sheet as well, since I found a couple missing sprites from it, and a couple of repeating sprites that were in the wrong section.

Before I forget it:

Last Cloudia (Mobile)
https://www.spriters-resource.com/mobile/lastcloudia/

Grand Summoners (Mobile)
https://www.spriters-resource.com/mobile...summoners/

You can keep an eye on these two games, the sheets which I submitted should get their approval step-by-step. I mainly ripped them because they had interesting collaborations going on (Secret of Mana, Kill la Kill, Onepunch Man, Goblin Slayer, King of Fighters). The content of the sheets is jumbled, though (and there's not much I can do about it).

About the games:

Harvest Moon
As far as I can see within vSNES, Jack's sprites can't be separated. You can see him and every other NPC mostly assembled when you load any Harves Moon ZSNES quicksave and then search the ROM inside the MemViewer. The PalViewer also has every possible palette for them, which is super convenient. The majority of the NPCs should be fine too, which means this game is mainly done.

Alcahest
Playing on easy and this game is hard as balls. Well, not really, but the 2nd stage sucks, as it is a labyrinth sewer and I have zero idea what to do, with plants taking too many hits, invisible enemies only defeatable with guardians, too many dead ends and other funny stuff.

Luckily, fantasyanime has an enormous amount of quicksaves for every tiny situation, so this should make things easier. I watched a video of all bosses and decided to only rip Golem (boss 2) and Alcahest (final boss). And since tilesets are easily viewable, I would like to try them too, especially the more exotic ones like the floating fortress. Of course, some of them need extra ripping due to special effects created ingame (palette cycles, etc.)

Super Metroid
Once I'm done with Alcahest, I'm trying this game. Back then, I only played the intro with Ridley and then never again, because I wasn't really into it. This time, I want to finish it and I will also take look at the Justin Bailey hack, which was missing some sprites according to the comments (crawling, hanging from ledges).

Crawling and hanging from ledges don't exist in the Justin Bailey hack I'm pretty sure, since I think it's just a graphic swap of vanilla Super Metroid with no gameplay changes.
