Glace's Sprite Thread [KH:CoM WIP]

Hey there... long time lurker, just recently got an account and something to post.

A couple years ago I made an edit of Demyx from Kingdom Hearts II in Chain of Memories style. Now I want to remake it properly. =# (Someone's probably done better, but I have no desire to go look for fanworks of the Organization. The fandom... >.>''' )
Here's what I have:

Mine's the one without the head, obviously. Current version on top. I haven't worked on the hood at all.
The thing bugging me most is his hands. I'm trying to make his fingers splayed... they look like black squares.

Any ideas? Anything that looked better on old versions? (Sorry I didn't save the oldest steps)


... Oh! One extra thing.
Most of my spritework is heavy Phoenix Wright/Apollo Justice edits, which I won't post since y'all hate edits. But here's one I scratched that I can't get any advice on on the PW/AJ forums.

The shading on that sprite is really good, but the lines feel a little messy. Some of the outlines could stand to be smoother or straighter; which can partally be achieved by toning down some of the anti-aliasing (the gloves and shirt cuffs are the most notable).

If you're specifically going for the Apollo Justice sprite style, then you might want to use darker outline shades. Shading for the sprite itelf is done in 3 fairly contrasing shades of a single hue, with a couple of shades in between used for antialiasing.

You're doing a very good job though; cool.

It's weird that you say that about the colors, since I actually took the palette from rips. I can see what you mean though, I tend to hesitate to use the darkest shade of a palette. And the lines, you're completely right, I abuse AAing so badly. XD'''' Thanks for the tip.

An update:

I re-drew the hands (gave up on the splayed fingers thing, too small for it to work) and made a head...any suggestions? (That's my old edit on the left by the way... ugly, isn't it? XD''''')
