PokémonJRPG Large-Scale Fangame for PC
#1
Hey bros, I'd like to inform you about a little project I'm currently helping out on. Based on doujin images created by some awesome japanese bloke a few years ago, a team of artists and coders banded together to make that idea a reality.

Loosely basing itself on the maps and plotline of RBY, Blue and Gold travel a Medival Kanto using Pokémon... but not in the way that you're used to.

In a parallel world to the Pokémon universe we're familiar with, Pokémon are rapidly starting to become a threat to society. The urbanisation of cities, and travelling across the region of Kanto becomes difficult when unknown numbers of monsters with seemingly magical powers hinders progress. In order to get by, the century-old practice of Soul Forging has been revitalised, allowing humans to convert the souls of Pokémon into tools, weapons, and other items; more effective than tools made from ordinary materials. While expensive, Pokéquipment has taken the entire world by storm, commercialised as a way humans can live free without fear of monsters.
But it's not so cut-and-dry. Soul-infused weapons are a prime target for the millitia, the government, and underground organisations. The High Councils across the regions of the country have tried their best to keep things in the balance, but something always slips through the cracks. On the other hand, individuals who find the extraction of souls cruel and abhorrent are becoming increasingly more vocal, and try to look for other methods to balance humans and Pokémon. But what happens when these philosophical differences collide?
At the same time, there's trouble brewing in Johto. Rooted firmly around a feudal political practice, the region refuses to adopt the govermental system of the High Council, and is starting to barricade itself from the rest of the country; not taking kindly to interlopers. If someone doesn't intervene and create a solution, there might be a civil war on their hands. Maybe the Kanto High Council can be mobilised to assist?
We follow the journeys of Blue - a charismatic thief from Palette Town - and Gold, a hot-headed bodyguard drafted in from Johto; as their misson to do some research for Philosopher Samuel Oak gradually turns into an adventure embroiled in the wonders of Pokémon, a quest for peace, and the mysterious-yet-influential Guild Rokka.
Will they restore political peace to Kanto? Who's outlook on society is the one true answer? Only time will tell.

In this world, Pokémon aren't caught - their souls are! These sould can be forged and implanted into weapons to create living, growing tools and armour that level up and learn skills as you battle. Each party member can have 6 slots of equipment - catch a bunch of Pokémon and create a truely unique warrior.

There are a whole bunch of other details of the plotline and characters that aren't meant to go 'public' yet, unfortunately. But what I can show you is the awesome artwork by the resident artist!

They already have artists, animators, and coders working on the project, but until I volunteered they hadn't any spriters! I'm a slow spriter myself, but Mozzy recently helped me out co create the first sprite for the main player character, Gold.

The team is anxious to see what you guys can come up with, so any attempts to help out will be appreciated. There is a degree of quality control though, I don't think they'd accept someone worse than I am.

If you're interested in finding more about the project or want to help out (they'd love you forever if you did) then you can check out their blog and resource board.

This is by far one of the better planned out Pokémon fangames on the 'net, and I'm gonna try my hardest to help them out, even if I'm not the best spriter on earth. :V

While I think this is awesome and all, I think the sprite style is a little too difficult to be kept consistent and be finished by a bunch or random people on the internet.

That's... largely the only sprite the game has (barring test sprites of various sizes before we got the proportions down). If a better more appropriate style was to roll around, they'd probably adapt to it.

I agree. The style should be more simplistic.

It's a pretty big idea so good luck to you guys making this game.

What are the specifications? I'd like to make an attempt

In the very early stages, upon showing various existing sprites to the staff to see what features they liked, they responded well to the following.

- Desaturated colours
- Hue Shifting
- A method of shading that uses a dark colour to 'block out' things that are in shadow
- Outlined sprites (selective outlining in situations where it's appropriate)
- 4 shades per colour, with once colour being the shadow/outline colour

Hue shifting and the block-out shading was the most popular, the '4 shades' was the most arbitrary, as a preventative measure to stop the sprites looking too simple.

As for the size, not much larger than the sprite I have posted above. The previous sprite designs were almost Guilty Gear size, it was intense.

That's because the project's based on those!

As for the sprite, that's because I'm useless at spriting. Cry

Would you be able to suggest a better or more appropriate style? We'd appreciate the input regardless.

Well. I'll tell you that even with a ton of awesome spriters, you won't be getting anywhere with a complex style (four shades? WHAT that isn't very pretty either tbh) and one thats so big. Make it atleast a little more simple and bring down the size.

An please don't tell me the non battle field is ISO :<
