Why do we need this many versions of the DS... christ this is getting out of hand.

Do you expect any less from Nintendo?

Game Boy Family:
Game Boy (GB and GB Pocket) -> GB Advance (GBA, GBA SP, GB Micro)

Nintendo DS Family:
Nintendo DS (DS, DS Lite, and DSi/DSi XL) -> Nintendo "3DS" ("3DS"...)

Apart from similarities in names alot of these consoles are different.

[Gameboy - GBC and CBP] Are the same console
Now for an entirely different console with the same name
[GBA - SP - GBA Micro]
And again
[DS - DSL - DSi - DSi XL]

And the 3DS has already been confired to be a new console with different hardware to the DS. But with backwards compatibility.
