Actually the different responses have made me notice something. Game customisation comes in two 'schools'.
Customisation that affects ganmeplay. The moves, armour, and abilities you have. Your 'build' to play the game with.
Customisation that affects aesthetics. Being able to design your avatar the way you want, and in as much detail as possible.
To be honest, I side with the former more. It bugs me when there are a lot of design options, but none affect how you play the game. That; and a lot of games have aesthetic customisation these days. Off the top of my head, APB, Little Big Planet 2, and this new american-football game all put an emphasis on it.
