To be honest, I side with the former more. It bugs me when there are a lot of design options, but none affect how you play the game. That; and a lot of games have aesthetic customisation these days. Off the top of my head, APB, Little Big Planet 2, and this new american-football game all put an emphasis on it.
why go for one when you can have both...?

I'm not saying you can't have both, only that there's a distinction. And that I value the former somewhat more.
