At the speed he'll probably be moving at, inertia would probably lift him off the ground as he swings around the pole. Plus you could give him airtime from it; could allow for some nice jump puzzles.
Also: Your style is pretty inconsistent. The level furniture in earlier posts are very Genesis-era Sonic (although those chess pieces need reshading, they're pretty ugly as is); but that screenshot you just posted is pretty bad. Those leaves are so undershaded and flat; the trees are featureless and impossibly straight; but they don't have the plasticy sheen and smoothness that the artificial-like plants in the Genesis games have.
