While that is neat looking, the glow effect makes it hard to use against a background.

Actually, I don't think so. I've tested it under many circumstances, and the only background that it is really hard to use against is a vibrant and bright BG, and white. I'll give you some examples.

Black: Good, obviously.
Blue Sky: Kinda mixes with the BG, not sure if good or bad. Sticks out though.
Gray: That's an interesting mix with the BG, and it's clear. I'd say good.
